Wondering aboutall the particulars on doing a repair job on an old cast alum. handel. I need to rebuild an area that had a threaded hole for a 7/16 bolt. Do i need to treat the alum like i would cast iron? preheat, slow cool? Would a 4043 filler rod work to eliminate the hole, or silicon alum. filler,or would it braze? Nothing critical here, the hole is where a guard is attached, so sees no weight or stress. TIG would be my process of choice, but have seen alum. braze rod in the past. Thoughts?
Reply:It depends on the quality of cast how it welds. I would grab some 4043 and go for it.Clean as you normally would, strike and arc and see how it puddles. You may need to "float" some of the junk out, burr it off and then start adding filler.
Reply:I do quite a lot of cast aluminum for the area powdercoater on parts people bring in. I really find it no different than normal aluminum and usually use my spool gun on it. |
