Dedicated MIG or power source?

Well I've been working with Steve to hopefully get a Maxtron 450 put together if he has enough parts, with wire feeder, MIG gun, stick leads, etc, but now I'm seeing a 350P for sale on CL. The Maxtron has much more output, the ability to stick and scratch TIG weld, but the 350P has more internal "settings" and pulse ability (which I would like), it's also much more portable and could be run off my generator at lower settings. As for price, the Maxtron set up is around $2200 and the 350P is about $2600. As far as my uses, I almost always use MIG welding, mainly because I'm not very good at stick and TIG. But as my shop grows, it may be useful to have the added processes of the Maxtron?? By the way, Duane, if you read this, your inbox is full. Reply:Maxtrons can be a pain to get parts for. If you do allot of aluminum the 350p is amazing, otherwise not so much. The pulse is Ok on ferrous metals, but really only in certain situations (ss, gaps).  I own a XMT 456 and it is my favorite welder ever. Period. Best welder ever made in my opinion. I have far and away exceeded its duty cycle by multiple factors, and it never even gave me a warning light. An amazing TIG welder, stunning CV performance at the full range, and my my favorite stick welder. I sometimes run it off a vantage 400 because I love the 7018 uphill performance so much. One day, three of us took turns arc gouging some really big equipment, 550amps (600 was too much for the carbon) for over 7 hours, never skipped a beat. The next day tig some ss valve nests together, and it was fine.Constant Current Weldor.
Reply:A majority of the aluminum I do is for one customer and it's all 3/4" to 12" thick. Some 1/8" thick tubing here and there as well but I've got a spoolgun on my Hobart for that work.And Stick-man, why do you hate Illinois so much?? We got high taxes, higher than average gas prices, not to mention the beautiful winters! ...I tell you what, as soon as I get the opportunity I'm going to leave this God forsaken state. Reply:No Democrat voting from me! But I visited Dallas once for a week in July. Every day was 100+.
