Welding and electromagnetic field

Was doing some work for a friend the other day, a lot of cutting with the plasma cutter,grinding and welding when I noticed something on my patio. Reply:I have a buddy with on of those defibrillators who is always in the shop talking mess. I told him I was going to lay the leads on the floor and lure him in the middle and turn the welder o on and trap him, because he is not suppose to be in a electromagnetic field. Reply:On a directional bore job that I was working on, they used a Lincoln Ranger 9 and a junkload of welding cable. They took the cable, connected it to he + lead and ran it around the jobsite start and made loops around it, then ran the lead directly back to the - lead. It was a loop of cable running from positive to negative. I thought to myself how I would never do that to MY Ranger 9. All they were doing was creating a magnetic field for the computer to track the head of the bore tip. Interesting stuff. A short time later someone showed up on the job site at night and stole the welding cable. OUCH!!!! Reply:I've heard of a job site prank of coiling leads around tools then throwing the tools up to the duct work. Never actually seen it done though.

Reply:Our old stud gun at work does some wild stuff if you leave the leads coiled while shooting studs. That's how I magnetize my screwdrivers. Works every time.

Reply:I had a very large (over 50 feet in length) pressure vessel on one project that became heavily magnetized at the weld prep.  We had wrapped leads around it in an attempt to demagnetize it, and when you wrapped it much like you would a Helmholtz coil, you could actually get a piece of filler metal to vibrate like a tuning fork when you stuck it through the root opening.
