I recently heard someone referring to half bead technique. I'm pretty sure, by his explanation, he was talking about temper bead technique. Now I just came across someone mentioning "glass bead" on the interwebz. In a sentence about repairing PH stainless steel. Does this even exist, and if so, could someone please explain this (briefly) to me?Thx in advance...
Reply:Are you sure it was related to welding and not glass bead blasting after welding?
Reply:I'm sure that's what I read, but I'm not too sure the guy mentioning this, knew what he was talking about. Or maybe he misheard or was thinking about blasting and misspoke. But he was also talking about PH stainless, and this is not something joe schmo does every day (purely looking at it from an availibility point of view of 17-4 or similar). so there's a slight chance he knew a bit more than meets the eye. Sure as hell though, I've never heard of it.
Reply:Glass bead I'd assume to refer to using glass beads in a sand blasting operation for preparation.I've heard the term half bead used on occasion to mean an overlapping bead or one that covers the previous bead by 50%. We often use the term "half on, half off" to explain those to students. We use these to get students ready for multiple pass beads on things like fillets, and it gives them more weld on less material which saves material and money..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:I have never heard of it either.I did a quick search and the only reference I found that involved glass bead and welding (not preparation for welding or after welding) is a method to produce artificial flaws.http://www.ndt.net/forum/thread.php?&rootID=34561
Reply:thanks for that. I doubt that was the meaning he intended though I'll just leave it at that and pretend I never heard/saw this...
