i am in school thinking about getting a new helmet.(currently using a fixed shade jackson). while researching i found that many welders swear by their pipeliner/fibre metal hoods.Do you think an AD hood is all that good?/worth it?
Reply:You can put auto inserts into a pipeliner hood.
Reply:Yes and no it's good to have both. Depending on the situation the ad hood may be more trouble than a fixed shade. Welding outdoors for example a fixed shade is better IMO, and indoors auto dark is the shizznit. I say why not have several of both. There are just too many scenarios in the wide world of welding to pick one over the other.Thermal arc 211iCk flex-loc 150 & 130Clamps, saws & grindersHarbor freight 80 amp inverter
Reply:I use an ArcOne auto lens in my Pipeliner hood. Here lately I've been having a lot of neck pain from a neck injury years ago. Last Friday I ordered this hood. Being as it only weights .63 pounds. I have a real problem spending much money on a hood. And also the cost of clear lenses. Friend of mine bought a Longevity hood, they want $17.00 a piece for a clear lens!http://www.arc1weldsafe.com/accessor...t-filters/s240http://www.tooldex.com/safety-securi...g-helmets.html Attached ImagesDon’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Hey buzzboy,In my opinion, it's good to have a fixed-shade of some sort around even if it isn't your primary.  I keep a Jackson cheapo fixed-shade in the truck for times when I don't want to chance tearing up my NexGen, but I use the NexGen 98 percent of the time.  Got it back in 2003 and it's still doing fine, just charred up a little more now than it was then.  The shields and headgear are the same in both -- only difference is the lens.Agree with the comments about not buying something with odd-sized cover lens requirements, as you'll be replacing those all the times, both inner and outer.  I keep a stack of both around; mine uses regular old 4" x 5" lenses with notched cutouts on the inner lenses which I can make myself from regulars if necessary. My advice is to try out a few different shields before you buy, don't buy the cheapest thing out there when it comes to AD.  AD is pretty darn nice when you're doing a lot of tacking and fitup.  Fabricating vs just rod-burning.  Those who spend a lot of time continuous welding tend not to see the advantages as much.EDITED to remove my first line which could have been have been misunderstood.Last edited by tbone550; 10-26-2014 at 12:41 PM.
Reply:Buy a pipeliner and you will not go back, wish I had bought mine years ago

Reply:like my pipe-liner, with fixed shadeyou wont see me throwing away my a.d. miller eliteyou wont see me throwing away my beat up huntsman.I started with the 20$ Jackson I used in high-school. it served me well until I was introduced to spray-arc.don't up-and buy a pipeliner just cause someone says so. i'll weigh my opinionspro:its easy to flick downtight-fit keeps light from the wrong side of the lens while weldingeasy to find lenses foreasy to put stickers onits weight is phenomenally smallwhen up, its past its center of gravity, so even if its set up loose it wont come downcons:I've seen numerous people unable to cope with how easy it is to flick down, and strip out the studs trying to tighten them, effectively ruining the head-gearthe studs are 1/4" N.F. or 1/4" 28 I believe, so not like you can go through your box-o-nuts and replace the plastic oneseven after trimming, it is big in the chin so that I have a hard time holding something with my belt-line and tacking it. cant bend my neck all the way down and still see I guesswhen upside-down, it has a tendency to flip up while weldingI had to take apart my +$ headgear to adjust the spring that is supposed to hold head-band settings.the high-angle of the hood when up means I whack it on every pipe I attempt to walk underevery time I bend down, the hood comes down too and slowly eclipses the marks I was attempting on the concrete.the fibre-metal is a welders hood through and through, but if your not welding 100% of the time your wearing it, it can be a little frustrating at times. still my favorite though for the weight and simplicity alonebosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:I have a  cheap plastic CIGWELD  flip top, and a speexglas 9100xx, i use the flip front for TIG, and the speedglas for stick and mig, mostly for the air fed though, i hate breathing stick fumes.Sent from my LG-P716 using Tapatalk
Reply:There are all sorts of thinks a guy can use to make lens covers with that people toss I. The trash every day.I seen my dad bought a 15 3m headlight restore kit but had him return it as some plastic polish works just as good, faster and cheaper. A guy told me he uses deep woods off to do his? I don't know about that but worth a try if you have some. Plexus works well and I even tried the Polish I gave to dad on a lens the other day. It works very well. Matter of fact it is the only real use I ever had for it before. I think they were throwing the bottle out at work and that's is how I came to have it.Sent from my SCH-I545 using TapatalkCRIME SCENES, COURT DATES, FUNERALS, RIDING THROUGH THE CITY WITH A BITCH THAT IS JUST BEAUTIFUL IT'S JUST BUSINESS AS USUAL.
