Reply:Is that what is being used to salvage the Deep Water Horizon drilling platform in the Gulf? That's what came to mind when I saw what they were doing with it.
Reply:It reminds me of Howard Hugh's converted drill ship Glomar Explorer that was built back in the mid 70s to retrieve a sunken Russian nuclear sub. There's a pretty interesting documentary about that that can be found on Netflix called.... "Azorian: The Raising of the K-129"

Reply:That thing or one just like it is based in Sabine Pass, TX. I drive past it on the way to one of my fishing holes. I never see it doing anything but sit, I thought it was some kind of dry dock.

American intelligence located it within weeks of its demise. The CIA crafted a secret program to raise the submarine in 1974."Welding/Fab Pics: www.UtahWeld.com

Reply:That thing reminds me of the mobile A frame that was used to pick up segments of the bay bridge leading to SF about 8 years ago.   It would pick up one segment and put it on a barge.   The barge could carry two segments.   There were only three of these A frames in the world.   I was working on a dredge in the port while it broke down and couldn't move.    It was made in Italy.   I remember it, because we were having record breaking temperatures since the 1920's, and I was the hottest I ever was in my life, wearing a leather jacket, and running 232 between two steel pontoons.   Almost 20 old people died from the heat spell in our county, and so many cows died, the tallow works couldn't keep up, so they were being trucked to landfills.    The A frame broke down about 1oo yards from me, and there it stayed, because the world cup soccer games were going on, and I guess in Italy, its like the superbowl everyday over there, and they couldn't get anyone to answer the phone in the parts dept. for this A frame for days to get parts.
