I gota love the engineers of the automotive industry, they must figure out the hardest or stupidest way ....and put it into production...why press a pulley onto a power steering assembly...and do it sfter the pump is installed in the van, so you must first unpres the pulley to remove the pump..why not a keyway and bolt? ahhh too easy..so your just pulling the pulley with minor friction...well anyways..is a 1988 van so the damp pulley is almost 25 years old....went o harbor freight and got there power steering puller $19.99 minus the 20% coupon..and the puller worked great,,the pulley not so..after 25 years the groove that the puller pulls against deteriated enough to let the puller slip off..hmm so out comes the lincoln 100 mig welder, put a bead around the pulley and im sure the heat helped and with some big wrenches off came the pulley, tomorrow we see if the pulley goes back on the new pump..im not holding m y breath..here are a few pics.. Reply:I love "The Cage" pullers where you have room for 'em. I have 3 sizes that do most things on and off vehicles. I think their other name is "Posi-Lok". It makes short work of absolutely everything I've put it on.I had an a/c pulley/clutch I couldn't get off. There was a weird snap ring but the threads were boogered and it was just a c-fk. Put the puller on and it sheared a hardened steel 1/16" thick snap ring with 1 turn of the puller. It was the most fascinating thing I've done in quite a long time.. I was tempted to try and get my plasma torch in there with unshielded gouging consumables and try and zap it at 20A for a split second, maybe even just the pilot arc to soften the steel.. but nope. One pop later off it came.Miller: 200dx, Bobcat 225, Passport, Powermax 45, Milwaukee: Dry Saw, MagDrill, grinders
Reply:I wouldn't take the chance of ruining the new pump shaft. the pulley doesn't cost that much to replace with new.miller thunderbolt 250vlincoln square wave tig 175 prolincoln idealarc mig sp250everlast tig 210EXTeverlast power plasma 50chicago electric (hf) 130 tig/90 arcchicago electric 90 amp flux wire3 sets oxy/acet
Reply:If you welded on the lip while on the old pump yet it should press onto the new pump no problem. if you are worried just grind off the welded on lip, shouldn't have to pull the pulley again.
Reply:Or buy a lathe and clean up the lip.
Reply:By the look of the pulley grooves I'd say it's going to eat up a belt pretty quick anyway.                                            MikeOl' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw
Reply:Just so you know they do make a saginaw pump with a tapered shaft/keyway.They are a lot less common though.... Just an fyi.HTP Invertig 201Lincoln Idealarc SP250Miller 180 AC StickBy farmall:They should have held the seagull closer to the work, squeezing evenly for best deposition.
Reply:probably make them without the key and bolt to cut down on production costs like everything else. Sure they can make easy to disassemble, but would cost more to produce and cut into profits, same old story."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:I'll tell you how it happens. The engineer designs it the way they think is best. Then the project manager comes up to them and says "I spoke with upper management and gave them the preliminary cost. They asked how we could cut it by 20%". BAM! pressed on pulley. In any event, nice save!
Reply:Ok, day 2, picked up the new pump, no problem, now the clean up the pulley..I used an internal expanding holder, these things are great!!!  its not spec perfect but its going back on a 25 year old truck that primarily going tobe used off road around my farm..I faced the welding bead I put on to pull the pulley and did the sides..half a chance its somewhat in balance, the pulley went back on a hell of alot easier than I thought and bottomed out right where shes supose to, all back together and working... ill end up wire wheeling and sanding all the pulleys, the truck was sitting for about 5 years, so the belt doesnt get torn up... Reply:Nice little fix. I like that you left the shoulder for next time. Ever thought about becoming an automotive engineer?  Of course most companies only care about how fast the car can be assembled and could really care less about the mechanics speed and comfort down the road.
Reply:Are those shop built arbors? I like them and could use a set!
Reply:I'm sure other companies make them too, but I found these on google:http://www.breakhearttool.com/products

Reply:On my (6.2 diesel) ps pump, the actual mounting plate itself cracked behind the pulley, I used that same puller for removal so I could weld the plate back up to proper. The same pump after 29 years tho. -c-
