Hi,I just ordered a Hobart 190 with a Spool Gun. I need some info on what type of gas I need to use with it ?.. I do plan on welding aluminum too!I've read where some here are using a % of Argon and a % of another gas in the same cylinder. Am I correct on that ? I'm sorry, but I have never had a welder before that used gas, and I've never welded with gas before.Go ahead and laugh at me if you want to, I really don't care.I own my oxygen & acetylene tanks and they're the large ones.. I now need to locate me a cylinder for my welder, and I'm sure I can get what I need in the morning, but I have another question. What size cylinder should I get ?Any other info that anyone has would help. Thanks!
Reply:You can't mig weld alum and steel with the same gas. Alum will require 100% argon. Steel usually requires either an argon/ CO2 mix like 75/25 or 80/20 ( "normal" mix varies by gas supplier) for small migs like yours, or 100% CO2..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Get the biggest tank you can carry. Refills are cheaper in larger volume.I'm no weakling, but I have a 244 CF bottle and it's not too easy to lift by myself. In a few years I'll need help with it. Reply:Grab a 125 cuft of 75/25 or 80/20 ar/co2 (whichever your welding shop carries) AND a 125 cuft of straight argon. Reason I suggest this is because prices are always on the rise. Three years ago a 125 cuft bottle base price was $170 for me. Now the base price is $230. I don't know how things are for you over there, but in hindsight I now wish I would have just bought two back then.Even if you don't plan on lots of aluminium now, later on you might get a tig, and that will require straight argon for either steel or aluminum.
