Tractor Supply Company (TSC) has stores in the USA and Canada.  TSC sells Praxair gas cylinders and gases on both sides of the border - with a difference! Here's the current July 23, 2010 prices for gas cylinders and gas fills in the USA and Canada.Gas Capacity is in cubic feet (cf) and the prices are in dollars.Note:  On july 23 2010, the Canadian dollar was worth $0.96 US.  So with only a 4% diffference, consider all the prices to be in US dollars.  TSC has 10% off sales all the time in Canada, so the prices shown are ball-park in any case.So what's this all mean?SIZE: The number of size cylinders available in the US is about 2X what is available in Can.The maximum size to own/exchange cylinder in the US is:Acetylene – 125 cf in the US versus 85 cf in Can.  E.g. 1.5X as bigOxygen – 252 cf in the US versus 83 cf in Can.  E.g. 3X as bigC25 – 125 cf in the US versus 85 cf in Can.  E.g. 1.5X as bigArgon – 80 cf in the US versus 58 cf in Can.  E.g. 1.4 X as bigPRICE:Acetylene – Canuks pay $70 for 60 cf, US folks pay $44 for 75 cf.  Canuks pay 2X the US price.Oxygen – For 80 cf, Canuks pay $43, US folks pay $23.  Canuks pay 2X the US price.C25 – For 80 cf, Canuks pay $62, US folks pay $40.  Canuks pay 1.5X the US price. There is more selection in the USA and things are bigger and cheaper!  Yep, we Canadians are getting screwed!Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet
Reply:it may a supply and demand type thing, it aint right, but neither is it right for gas to be 2.90 here in town, and 2.68 not 10 miles away. just wish i would have none that at 4am when i left this morning....lol..... but it seems like you guys always get shafted. food, gas, cigs, beer, everything is more money over there..... what is your minimum wage in canada??? just curious, here its 7.15 i think. what is does the average welder make there? here its 8 to 14 for fab shops, and 10 to 25 for non union pipe and constrution welders.union goes from 25 to 34. sorry to jack your thread, just curious. thanks, Hammer
Reply:It is hard to make sense of the differences in price, maybe regulations dictate the difference in sizes I dunno.I'd take that same list to a Liquid Air LWS and see if they want to play ball. A regional LWS offering Liquid Air has kept sort of a price war going for more than 20 years in my geographic area.Prices have been going up but nowhere near what I've seen from some folks posting.Matt
Reply:Hi Hammer... "gas to be 2.90 here in town, and 2.68 not 10 miles away".Ha!  Price here is $1.02 per litre... that converts to $4.02 a US gallon in your $.Come on, how'd you like to pay that?  Hmmm $4.02 / $2.68 = yep 1.5X as Much. Reply:I expect travel across the border is probably pretty brisk at times then as $25 in fuel to save hundreds in product = no brainer...And "what in the wide, wide world of sports" is up with the 9% "none" health care benefit???Matt

Reply:Prices for product and selection are far different here in Canada ( specifically Ontario ) than the USA. As stated we pay far more for the same product as our neighbours in the USA. Purchase most any product and you  pay 13% HST ( Hated Sales Tax ) and on many items an ECO FEE  ( we pay HST on the  ECO FEE as well . They Tax a Tax ). ( we pay eco fees on tires electronics, paint shampoo, cement etc to make sure it is disposed of responsibly supposedly  ) So you can add  $ 13 plus eco fee to every  $100 purchase. The Hst came to Ontario July1  2010 , gasoline, heating oil, diesel propane all went up about 8-10 % overnight.  Gasoline can jump close to 10 cents per litre over nite. ( 946 ml = 1US qt)( 946 ml X 4 US qts = 3.784 Litres or 1 US gal  )  A 38 cent / gallon increase over night   with the stronger Can $ I am doing far more shopping in the USA for groceries ( about 1/2 price of here ) Hard goods 1/2 price of here or less. Better selection and for the most part better service from the retailers. Best of all I can buy Canadian beer Molson Canadian in cans for $15.99, the cost at our Brewers Retail (A monopoly on the sale of beer in Ontario) is $40.00 !

Reply:I"m resurrecting this - any Canadians filled in the US? I'll give the border a call tomorrow and I'll check around Buffalo, NY area to see what's available.Hey Rick, if it works looks like the closest for you is Vermont.
Reply:My girlfriend and I spent a night in Niagra falls and went across the border the next day , so I went down to TSC and picked up a Hobart Stickmate ac/dc 235 :-D  saved a couple hundred bucks buying in the U.S.

Reply:vv111y resurrected this thread... back from July 2010 = 2/5 years ago.Has anything changed?I made a new chart based upon Tractor Supply Company (TSC) current (Jan 27 2013) prices in Dallas TX USA and Ottawa ON Canada.Canadians are still getting beat on the gas prices... but maybe not as bad as 2.5 years ago.  Gas cylinders prices are the same either side of the border.  USA folks still have more choice in sizes.  What's with acetylene - US prices are similar to 2.5 years ago while Canadian prices seemed to have 'ascended into heaven'.Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet

Reply:Yikes!  Hey, I'm just grumbling about the disparity between US/Canada gas prices; sure didn't mean to touch off a major political debate. Rick V 1 Airco Heliwelder 3A/DDR3 CTC 70/90 amp Stick/Tig Inverters in Parallel1 Lincoln MIG PAK 151 Oxy-Acet

Reply:Unfortunately, this is a common US problem, which I'm sure doesn't happen in Canada, which is liberals and conservatives arguing about rather the government is doing the right or wrong thing.    Therefore, if the price of gas is higher, the liberals are complaining it's because of corporate greed, and the conservatives complaining it's because of the negative business environment and high taxes.   When the real question is,  Hey, can I save a few bucks if I buy my welding gas at the TSC in Sault Ste Marie Ontario, or in Sault Ste Marie MI?     Tractor Supply locations:695 Great Northern RdSault Ste. Marie, ON P6B 5A1, Canada4646 Interstate 75 Business SpurSault Ste. Marie, MI 49783Of course, not taking into account, it's a toll bridge - wait a minute, isn't this the bridge that some greedy American is fighting to keep some Canadians from building a free bridge??????

Reply:For the Canucks.  KMS tools in Alberta and BC sell and refill cylinders.  They also have a big sale on welders and plasmas Feb 14-16th., one of which is Cutmaster 42 for $1299.Here's a link to the flyer, they also ship Canada wide.  They have a club feature where any tools are 30% off.http://www.kmstools.com/eflyer/Last edited by dellwas; 02-02-2013 at 08:34 AM.
