http://www.toolfetch.com/sumner-7811...PnUaAgLZ8P8HAQim looking really hard at these, and my finger is on the trigger. 2"-6", and 5"-12". try and talk me out of it!has anybody used these? I just see it a good alternative to the good ol chain-clamps and angle iron that I am used to using. im frustrated with chain-clamps (and I mean the vise-grip style) because, no matter what, you almost need a helper. fabbing some 10" today, and trying to hold two clamps (yea my "extensions" aren't quite long enough) with a piece of angle with a 90 and trying to set gap and add fill-rod got the best of me in the worst way . . . .the wind really pushed me over but, anyhooare these style clamps worth their cost? and does anybody know the difference between the "ultra clamp and the ultra-fit clamp"?and while im asking, they seem to be an undercut of the mathey dearman "quick-fit". . . . . .I saw mathey's first but is it really a "get what you pay for situation?and there always is the great possibility that I missed something in life and there is a much cheaper and easier way to fit big pipe without help. if you know, please help me!Last edited by 92dlxman; 10-15-2014 at 11:21 PM.bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:I've been on jobs where they had those. They are pretty darn handy.
Reply:thanks man, I'll chalk that up as plus 1000. the only thing im worried about is if they are easy enough to tack around, and whether or not they can take care of a little bit of miss-match. like today, sch 10, something is going to be a little wonkeybosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:if you handle a lot of 4'and 6" pipe they really come in handy ,  the difference between the ultra and the ultra fit is one has one set of jacking screws while the other has two sets of screws . which come in handy with out of round pipe . under 3" just use the strong hands type of fit up clamp  .My self I used to have two different chain clamps from Dearman ,one 12" one 36" http://www.matheydearman.com/product...niversal.shtml gxbxc
Reply:thank you sir! imma wait till tomorrow and see if I still feel I need thembosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin

Reply:92dlxman,I have one of those Sumner clamps.  Very handy and very easy to tack up so long as you don't mind using 3 equally spaced tacks instead of 4 tack welds. It has some gripping force but if you really torque down on the screw you can flex the arms of the clamp.  Not really for forcing bad fitup or squeezing thick(scd 40 or heavier) back into round. It is very easy to use and you can adjust it with 1 hand; which is handy if you have a elbow or flange in the other hand.  All in all, not a waste of money.  But I wouldn't buy one to just throw on the shelf.  wait till you have a definite need for an upcoming job.Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector
Reply:If you can make money with them, you gotta buy ! We used a plate clamp hooked on a chain fall or a roustabout to grab a 10'' weld ell schedule 40 .Works great and hangs pretty level to. Oh, working on concrete floor.   Those clamps are better then a chunk of angle or some 3/8 pins tacked on .
Reply:ok, im ordering the 5-12.i'll show it off at "normal" work and hopefully they will see the benefit and buy a few for the rest of the guys. then mine will go on the truck for "other" work!wish I would have done it sooner, I still have some 12" in the garage that will be calling my name this beautiful weekendi'll post back with my review soon.bosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:These are two of the small fit up clamps I use  both built on vise grip copies   The one with the attachments is made by a fellow down New Orleans way ,it fits 1 1/2' to 4"the other is a Stronghands.gxbxc
Reply:haha! just got it!I tested it on some 6" in the garage real quick and it seems pretty handy! perfect high-low in less than a minute, and seems easy enough to tack aroundit seems pretty flimsy, i don't see any re-forming going on with it, or using in place for miss-measured tie-ins but if all is round, it should do the trick!cant wait to work it, I've got some 8 and 10" sch10 ss coming up that is more or less the reason i bought it. hopefully i get the ok soonbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:I'm interested in how well they work also.  I HAD multiple sets of the old style, Tipton cage clamps.  Everything from 4" to 26".  I NOW have a set of 4", 10", 24" and 26"... Crackhead scrappers have gotten away with the rest of them.  I just bought a new 12" set last week, to the tune of $327.00... If I could get a couple of these to handle everything up to 12", it would be quite a bit of money saved, as well as easy to store on my rig as they don't take up a lot of space...  I have 2 sets of the stronghand type shown in a post above, and you can't beat them for small pipe in my opinion.  very handy.  I don't know if the Sumner ones would work in the application I bought the 12" ones for, welding .375 wall bore casing.  It's usually used pipe, sometimes somewhat less than round.  takes some pretty stout clamps and usually some adjusting with a large hammer.  I did buy a couple of the Sumner folding pipe jacks (v head) and I'm very happy with the quality of them.  All of my old jacks are fixed leg.  Ok in the shop, but not very handy to haul around in the truck.  Especially running a tub...-------------------------Chemetron AC/DC 300 HFSnap-On MM300L Lincoln SP140 Lincoln AC/DC 225g Lincoln SA200 Lincoln SA200 Miller Bobcat 225GVictor torchesH&M and Mathey beveling machinesMcElroy Plastic pipe fusion

Reply:Originally Posted by A_DAB_will_doIf you're dealing with out of round pipe the sumner clamps will hold, but won't do anything to correct imperfect pipe.  They're just not rigid enough to apply that kind of pressure.  X2 on the Sumner folding jack stands.  I have several and they are convenient to haul in the truck.  they also take up much less space standing in the corner of my shop.  I don't weld much pipe these days.  But those stands have worked well on a few other projects; and have more than paid for themselves.
Reply:Originally Posted by handtpipelineI don't know how much the jack stands usually sell for, but I bought these two at Airgas in Tulsa, $198 and some change out the door after tax.  That's less than $100 a piece for them.  I thought it was a pretty good deal myself.  I'll be buying more of them.  Some of my old jack stands, it damn near takes a tractor to pick them up and move them around...
Reply:I also paid about 80$ a piece for my folding jacks, vee head. I was pretty impressed with the strength of them compared even to the non folding ones. Wouldn't a tack on half clamp work better to correct hi- lo?
Reply:what is this tack-on half clamp?im not familiar with much, we use mostly chain vise-grips and angle to fit stuff.  along with come-alongs and forklifts and whatever else is nearbyim not particular to anything that has to be "temporarily welded", but if you think it is effective, please let me know! there has to be something better than chains and anglebosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
