Sorry in advance if this question has been addressed, did some searching, havent seen anything pertaining to myself so much.so, i drag my root into the 3/8 steel plate and of course after goes the hot pass. I know the hot pass is supposed to be the "cleaner" so to say but I find with my overhead im trapping slag on the sides close to the bevel.. I also know that the wagon tracks should come out pretty easily on overhead. not sure what my problem is thus far. im also stepping the hot pass very tight. and in case it helps i usually run my roots around 95-100 amps depending on the gap, hot passes 105-110. ive also got a problem that the rod seems to be hitting one of the bevels during my hot pass which may be what is depositing slag into the other side? also using 6010 5p+ 1/8 inch rods for root and hot pass followed by 3/32 7018 for fillers and cap. bent one today and it failed due to porosity. porosity was very slight and very near surface (was told i couldve avoided the failure by grinding a little more after cutting out the coupons before bending) any help/suggestions/advice is GREATLY appreciated as i will be testing again tomorrow. had no problem passing vertical since its much easier.  this is also just for a trade school cert not a job.
Reply:On your 6010 hot pass, try running a U motion. The long sides of the U can be used to cut out any slag left on the toes of the root pass. The bottom of the U is your fill.Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400

Reply:You have to play with the arc length distance. When I go forward on the long sides of the U I have a bigger arc length. When I come back heading towards the bottom of the U I close up the arc length. This helps fill. I use this method with all passes in a groove weld with 6010 / 6011. Reply:[QUOTE=CEP;4884551]Yes that's the cap, but with 6010. This is a 6-G cap with 7018.oh okay gotcha. do you run roots and hot passes downhill and fillers and caps uphill?

Reply:I've honestly never worked in oil down there, though sometimes im tempted to try.went and got my passport a little while ago just in case. . . . . is it still pretty busy down there? the only work i have done in the area was some steam at the hospital. went down to add another trap last week and i didn't see as many rigs driving around as i did last yearbosses stuff:trailblazer 325maxstar 200my stuff:sa 200fronius transpocket 180100 amp Lincoln w/f97 f350 DITKevin
Reply:Curious why you're running the hot pass with 6010? When I was in school only the root was 6010 and the hot pass was 7018. Oddly, the only time I ever ran a 6010 hot pass was when I renewed by pressure test of 2" 6G. I didn't think you were allowed to but the guy at the testing center suggested it. Maybe he didn't want to see me burn through? It's a private test center that is approved for retests but not the initial test on 6". The good thing is that you can pay for booth time to practice before your test and the welders that work there are superb welders who will show you exactly what to do or what you're doing wrong. The owner makes a killing there but does everything possible to help you pass. He even cut my coupons so I could grind them.

Reply:Originally Posted by pipepipepipeis there enough up there to keep you busy? or do you travel? thats what i hear. my schools main instructor has pipelined for 25+ years and said there is tons of work here to keep you employed year round and welders are always in demand here. i see rigs all day everyday. hell, in my neighborhood ive seen about 10 parked in driveways/garages. i also know there are companies here that have work around the country as well if youre willing to travel.
Reply:Originally Posted by 92dlxmanlike I was telling o.p., I don't really do oil. my work is usually related to hvac in chilled water, hot water, steam, and maybe ammonia.I thought I was a decent welder until I noticed one of our "subcontractors" (we have a couple of regulars that have backgrounds in oil) welding 12" sch40 (6010 all the way out) in three passes. root, fill to flush, and cap!I tried to carry that kind of material and by 3/6 o'clock, I was eatin it hard lolI/ve been practicing my 6010 ever since
Reply:Originally Posted by 92dlxmanI work for a fairly prominent company, so yea, I stay busy, and rarely have to go out of town, but my work can be sweeping, layout, process tube, sch ss for caustics/acids, sch ss for hvac, sch ms for hvac, dwv, dw, nat gas, and medical gas. lot of food-plant work. im kind of a whore in the piping scene but I cant say im great at any of it. I rarely get inspected or tested (welding wise, aside from pressure test) but I am practicing at becoming able to do consistent x-ray welds.
