I've built a few of these heavy latches for my employer's jobsite Conex boxes (shipping containers). We've had these units broken into occasionally and cleaned out by unsavory types that I suspect are allergic to working for a living. So far so good with these 30 lb. babies. The hinge sports a one inch solid steel pin and the entire thing is constructed of 1/2 inch stock. The "box" is a great deterent against deadbeats from getting at the high security Master lock. Sure, a o/a torch and a few .045 discs and a grinder could get 'em in...but they'de have to steal them first. Reply:Very nice. The best deterents are the time consuming ones, or noisy ones. Noisy ones only work if there are people around to hear. The time consuming type make a crime of opertunity into a hassel and the unsavories move on to easier pickings. There are no problems. There are only solutions. It's your duty to determine the right one.Hobart Handler 210Airco 225 Amp MSM Stinger

Reply:When possible in the past, we usually parked a jersey barrier or excavator bucket or even a loader against the Conex door at the end of the workday. But, unfortunately, half the population has a Cat key and we've had our sh!t stolen by someone using our heavy equipment. We had a Miller Bobcat stolen that way.Anyway, I build the latches beefy mostly to intimidate the idiot thieves. The standard locking mechanism on a Conex box only allows for a scrawny little lock which you can beat open with a single hammer blow. I'd really like to be able to hide a hungry Pitbull or Doberman in them. Reply:I rigged a similar lock and box on 40'er. The tweekers cut a hole on the side of the container and went in. They used my tools inside my container to cut the bolts on the door lock off from the inside. They stole a lot

Reply:Very nice lock/latch. I like that you appropriately named it.
Reply:I like yours, it looks impressive and probably deters a lot of wannabe thieves. And it's installer friendly for those who can't weld.My container came with a similar device when I bought it. It's a little simpler, but it requires a skilled welder to install it. Either yours, or the one I've got, can be defeated but at least it's a barrier to overcome.Mean azz dog, and a shotgun are the best defense though I gots both"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:We put a almost identical set up on the door to a Microwave hut setting at one of the prison work-release camps around here. Works perfect. Building hasn't been gotten into for quite a few years now. Before that they were getting in there all the time. Reply:Glad you all like it. The name Kong just popped in my head...conjured up from memories of the giant lock to keep King Kong in on his island. The first three I built, I put MOSLER on them after the great old venerable safe and bankvault company. In any case, so far so good. Kinda fun to build on a rainy day and all from scrap.
