So I just finished my Beginner MIG/TIG class about 2 weeks ago. We primarily focused on TIG with a very little bit of MIG at the end of class. Between class and messing around at home, I only have about 30-35 hours of hood time. 1/8" wall mild steel tubing fillet, Thermal Arc 186 (my machine), 115 amps, 3/32's 2% lan, #8 cup, gas lens, 3/32 ER70S2 filler1/8" Aluminum "coupons", Dynasty 200 DX (school machine), 65% EN, 100hz, 125 amps, 3/32 2% cer, #7 cup, 3/32 4043 fillerThis one I was dipping at a good pace but didn't get enough filler in per dip so it was very concave.065" 3" Aluminum tubing, same Dynasty setup as above, 90 amps
Reply:Not a welder here and have never done tig but since you do not have an answer yet I will throw in an opinion. In the first weld. Not bad need to work on consistency.  The first 3/4 or so you can see the "waves" are uneven, at that 3/4 looks like you restarted.  To much filler. All in all not bad at all, just need some more time.Second the butt weld looks good, looks colder in the middle.  What I do not know to much about.  Seems like you started correctly.  Lot of pedal to get started then back off, but about a 1/4 way into it it looks cold.  Seems more of a build on top of the metal.  The end at the very top of the pic maybe let off the pedal a bit, and the butt weld a little more also.3rd pic looks like a good start and more consistent.  Seems like you got started and the heat got built up.  Like I do with my mig.  Looking again, maybe to much heat, seems like you have "under cut if I remember the term correctly"  Not going to try to hard to describe it.  But when the weld sinks below the metal and leaves an edge.  Looks better at the end.  4th I would say a heat issue.  Looks great, just the end is a bit fatter.  one of those consistency things.Last pic tubing is hard so you did great.  while your two pieces look crooked it's some practice.  (still do that here)  It's hard to keep the correct angle etc... when doing tube.  But I would go with consistency on that one.Like I said never tig welded anything, and not a welder (atleast professional)  I apologize for any misspelled words or lack of understanding due to my description.  I would say you have done great, hope to do that well with alum when I get a tig.
Reply:Thanks for the advice. In the first pic I did stop where the bead is higher. I started in the middle and then went all the way around and that high spot is where I ended. That fillet is on all 4 sides I joined 2 steel square tubes. On the aluminum tubing I noticed the hardest part was having to make four separate 1/4 rotation welds around it. I think once I get better I can do it in 3. Also the tubing itself is crooked, they were just 2 scraps laying around at class.
