Seen several posts of people using the Mig and Stick, but I am interested in the Tig side of the unit, any body (that knows how to Tig) used the Tig side? Would appreciate your views, I realize it's limited but I won't be doing any heavy stuff, it's rated at 1/4 that's ok with me. Thanks. Reply:Wow, Hard to believe no one with any Tig experience has tried out the Multimatic 200 ! As George Cloony said " must be a geographical oddities " or something LOL........Miller 252 Mig w/Spool GunMiller Dynasty 350 TigMiller 225 AC-DC StickMiller Spectrum 875 PlasmaOxy/Acet.
Reply:The unit's fairly new out on the market. Not a huge surprise many haven't had a chance to weld with one yet. I haven't had a chance to see one demo'd at my LWS yet. Prpbably have one the next time the Miller rep comes for an open house there.  My guess is it will tig pretty much like the Maxstars I've tried in the past..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:I thought I could use my Maxstar's air cooled torch but the Multimatic uses a different connector (smaller Tweco.  I have the adapter for the foot pedal, just no torch right now.I need to get some spares for the MIG (only one tip comes with the unit)  and I will pick up a new connector.  I think I'll watch ebay/craigs list for a new torch.  Another Wp17 (15ft) would be nice.Note the Multimatic 200 has two gas connectors on the back.  One for MIG, the other for TIG.  I suspect if you made a cart that carried two bottles you kinda negate the whole portable part of it.As for TIG performance.   Keep in mind there is limited settings for TIG.  Its lift arc only - no high frequency start.  MIG mode has no settings for gas flow.  I suspect TIG is the same.   If you really want to buy a TIG machine, I would go for a used Maxstar 200DX first.  About $1000 on Ebay.  Just no aluminum.  Nice stick welder an all the accessories work with the big boy welders as well. For me, I always wanted a passport.  This one is lighter, no silly internal bottle, and has a really nice working autoset.  I mean really nice.  Set it, then tweak if necessary.  Its a MIG welder with some add-ons.Con Fuse!Miller Dynasty 350Millermatic 350P-Spoolmatic 30AMiller Multimatic 200Hypertherm PowerMax 1000G3Miller Maxstar 200DX

Reply:the multimatic is no substitute for the passport. the passport is professional quality, the multimatic is hobby quality. Reply:Multimatic 200 is only 200 amp in mig mode. It is degraded to 150 amp max in cc (stick and tig) mode.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:Multimatic is way beyond "hobby quality".... I know, I own one. I haven't been able to use the tig function on the unit yet but ( not really into tig), if it runs and welds anywhere NEAR as smooth as the mig and stick functions I'm sure you would be pleased with it.Miller Bobcat 250Miller Multimatic 200 Miller & 3M PPEHobart electrodesDeWaltz toolsPT standsVictor MD torchRadnor HD  torch

Reply:I know this forum is older but I called Miller inquiring about this welder.  I was connected to a foreman in the manufacturing area.  He explained to me that this replaces the Passport Plus and will replace the Maxstar 150 series.  He continued to say that the welder shares characteristics and components of both these welders in the one unit. The Passport Plus is now a discontinued Miller product.  I'm actually looking forward to buying one of these little machines.  I suspect it to be better than just a Hobbyist welder, in fact I look forward to using it for Agricultural applications.  Using the 7018 for structural (Silo Unloaders, Grain Bins, Chopper Boxes, ect), MIG for good general repairs (Stanchions, machinery, ext), and TIG for use in the milkhouse if needed (Bulk Tank, Pipes, ect.).Last edited by mfldmike; 02-09-2013 at 10:52 AM.Reason: added details
