What type gloves do you folks prefer for welding outdoors with stick? I have a couple older pair of "Tillman" tig gloves which are supple and offer good dexterity, but are not the best at heat insulation when the rod burns down close to the stinger. I have a heavy pair of "L-Tec" branded gloves that came with one of my mig machines new but they are so bulky and cumbersome, I really don't use them much. Thanks,SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....
Reply:For cheapo's I think I use the Tillman 1000's. For better, I use Tillman 750's or I wouldn't be afraid of 850's."Where's Stick man????????" - 7A749"SHHHHHH!! I sent him over to snag that MIC-4 while tbone wasn't looking!" - duaneb55"I have bought a few of Tbone's things unlike Stick-Man who helps himself" - TozziWelding"Stick-man"
Reply:Usually my stick/ mig gloves are Tillman 42's IIRC. Heavier than my tig gloves but they still have decent dexterity. They don't take the heat my heavy gloves do though, but they are a good compromise between heat resistance and dexterity..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Actually, a government bureau is the nearest thing to eternal life we'll ever see on this earth! Ronald Reagan
Reply:look for a pair of gloves with a wool sock in it (that's what they call the lining) it gives the best insulation ,they also have add on panels or tig fingers . you really don't need the dexterity with stick that you do with tig  .You just have to be able to hold the stinger and pick up rod .gxbxc

Reply:miller makes some nice heavy duty stick/mig gloves.they are gauntlet style, comfortable and pretty long lasting.I'm still using the same pair for over a month(gotta be a record for me  )
Reply:i'm using black stallion and eliott right now even though they are kind of bulky. i had a dozen pair of white chief gloves that i liked but i think the rabin glove company went out of business. i just killed off the last pairi.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:Tillman 850 elk skins are worth every penny, I have 2 pair one for work and one for my truck. They are flexible and insulated best of both worlds. I never knew how much difference a good pair of stick gloves makes until I bought some.Ranger 250 thick stuffHobart Handler 140 not thick stuffthe pane and oxy setup
Reply:Black stallion!! I get a pair for 7$ and they last me a month. Till mans will last the same but they're 25$ at my lws
Reply:I had some plan jane gloves from Knoxville glove a few years back , and they lasted almost a year  but I wear my gloves until they, bust at the seams or the get to burnt and stuff to move .then I cut the fingers off and slipped them over a new pair of gloves for extra protection on the back of the hands.
Reply:I like Tillman 750's and Black Stallion 850s (I think they have better insulation than Tillman's 850) for heavy stick gloves. Tillman 48's for MIG and light stick. I also have Tillman 50s which are too stiff and have poor dexterity, and 35s which are very comfortable but the split-grain leather wears out quickly.JohnA few weldersA lot of hammersA whole lot of C-clamps
Reply:I just ordered some BS99 gloves because they go past my elbow which makes them really nice when you have to crawl under something, not just for welding.  Originally saw them for tow truck drivers crawling under cars to hook up the chains.   REVCO BSX Premium Pigskin/Cowhide Back Long Cuff Stick Welding Gloves BS99 - L https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0071O3GWC..._jMewub0TH89WMTiger Sales:  AHP Distributor    www.tigersalesco.comAHP200x; AHP 160ST; MM350P,  Spoolmatic 30A; Everlast PowerTig 185; Thermal Dynamics 60i plasma.  For Sale:  Cobra Mig 250 w/ Push-pull gun.  Lincoln Wirematic 250
Reply:I picked up the Tillman's 750s at the shop today and was thinking about buying them. I was having some heat issues with my Kobalt gloves. They are really nice gloves, but they have the issue of being really soft and allow a lot of dexterity, but apparently the heat protection gets a little thin when I crank up the MIG and it starts pumping heat on the back of my stabilizing hand. Instead, I found a heat shield that you can put on over top of the glove. It made a huge difference. Not sure if you can use this or not, but thought it was worth the mention. It can help prevent you from blowing out gloves constantly too, because they are much cheaper than gloves and will probably last a long time. http://www.discountsafetygear.com/al...eOwaAvaJ8P8HAQLincoln Dual 180 Power MIG
Reply:For flat, horizontal, and uphill, I wear the 2.99 el cheapo Chinese leather/cloth gloves.Any time I go overhead, or have to place my hands directly under the puddle, it's the Tillmans I think.  The ones with the Nomex lining (big shrug)For flux core, it's the spendy Black Stallions.  Lotta spatter that burns thru the cheapo cloth portion of the Chinese gloves. It's not so much the hands as it is the arms.  Slag has a nasty habit of finding the fold in the shirt sleeve, and burning thru."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I think, that once you quit worrying about spilling your puddle when welding out of position, the gloves become sorta secondary.  They mostly protect you from the heat of the arc as the rod burns down closer to the stinger"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:I am partial to Black Stallion 850s. Started off with Mediums, Now I run XL's, I get more life out of them. Being right handed and getting in position, Texas 2 fingering, You lend to burn the backs of your left hand fingers allowing them to shrink and roll back. Plus if you stay in a bead and they get too hot, you can easily throw them off with a flick of the wrist. Only once did I wear through the palm/finger side of a pair. Also in the winter, when you grab a welded pipe to heat up your hands, it doesn't help the life. http://www.plwelder.com/store.php/pr...on-850-gloves-14' PowerMig 210 MP13'Burntables 5x10 CNC Table14' SAE300 HE on a 12' Ram 4500 60 CA 4x4.
