I have found a place that sells drops of heavy plate. I want to replace my 3/8" top due to warpage.I want to go with 1/2" thick top as a min. My frame is 28"x40" made from 2"x2" 1/4" wall square tube. What thickness and OVER hange would you recommended?Note we have not had a welding table question in at least 2 days.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:mine as 3" overhang to allow for clamping rd edges, its drilled and tapped 5/8 every 6" starting 12" in to allow use of clamping kit.its 2" thick and 8'x12' was made to my design by place im working at but due to some of bits we do are prototypes for our machines not allowed to take pics.Last edited by mickg; 05-24-2013 at 08:51 AM.
Reply:I'd go at least 3'x4',
Reply:How much overhang do you have now ?? Are you gonna get another 3/8'' thick and lay on top of the existing 3/8 ?? Overhang can vary by choice. I would say 2 '' depending on what kind of drop sizes are available. It's nice to have a few of the DEEP THROAT clamps too.
Reply:BD1I have about a 4" overhang. No I want to just get one piece. The 3/8 is not too bad but I hate dealing with the warp.NaughtyboyThat sounds like a great and heavy table. With the fram I have what would be max thickness in your folks opinion?Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:@ Reebs - 3' x 4' x 1/2" with a 4" overhang (perimeter). Rock'd this geometry for my first welding table and it's awesome. Good luck bro!"Discovery is to see what everybody else has seen, and to think what nobody else has thought" - Albert Szent-Gyorgyi
Reply:1/4" wall, pretty much the sky's the limit. but anything over 1"-1.5" will just be a waste of money.I'd go 1". 3/4" at a minimum.as for the over hang, I'd go 3'x4', especially if you go with a 1" top. Reply:it is a lovely bit of kit.jigged up a chopper frame i was building on it for 5yr old boy and it looked like something from dolls set.then went other extreme where one frame we were doing verhung all rd by 3'
Reply:Take a look at the clamps you are going to be using and the depth needed for them.....I'm guessing a 3" - 4" overhang. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:SWellsGood thought. I like the idea of drilling holes to clap things.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:It's all logical Dave, wanna know the height? Stand with your arm at a right angle and make the table height a few inches shorter than where your hand is. (keep in mind what you will spend most of your time working on...if it's large and tall go a few inches less than that). If I was setting up two tables, I'd go with holes in the top of one. Knowing my luck every nut/bolt or screw I needed would fall in if it was my main table. If you don't want to stand behind our Troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
Reply:SWells I understand: I have had this table for a few years and like it (minus the warp) 3x4 is a little small but its just me in a very tight garage. On the weekends and summer when I do my work it looks like my garage vomits its guts into the driveway, I like room when I work.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio
Reply:I have a 1/2" thick top on mine and 1.5" overhangs. I went with that for a few reasons. This is being used as general purpose table not just dedicated for welding, that means things are going to get hit with a BFH from time to time. I can't stand when a table edge gets knocked down and the edges are where the majority of the pounding gets done so I left just enough to get a clamp on if needed. I could only afford 1/2" material at the time and couldn't find any used pieces of anything when I was looking. If I had a thicker piece I would have put more of an overhang on.
Reply:You should see my table at work, it's 3/4" thick and totally jacked up, it's 10 years old and gets used 40 hours a week, ps over hangs average at 6"UA local 32Team weld-coolTeam miller elite tack upMiller pro-staff
Reply:Take the longest reach clamp you have, or plan to buy, like long reach Vise grips, and make the over-hang that much plus a bit more.Just my opinion, not from a book, just from the road.Howes Welding Inc.www.howesweldinginc.com
Reply:Besides facilitating clamping, sufficient overhang provides toe space. My table support provides enough leg space for me to work sitting comfortably in an office chair.
Reply:I"m all for the drill and tap thing, but why not just drill 5/8 hole and call it a day. use buildPro's clamps... heck, there's another member here that's making his own buildpro clamps, works great, and no need to tap.oh, and to answer your question, i'd go with 1/2 inch plate and 4 inch overhang for conventional clamps.
Reply:Thanks oxy moron I will look into that. Thanks guys Iove all the help.Dave ReberWadsworth Ohio |
