Hi, First post, I have a few 2.00 SS weld Bungs I need to do. Is there a huige difference in say Argon with SS Wire as opposed to SS Innershield? It doesnt have to be ultra pretty,no pressure on it to speak of,just need a functional weld. I have a Miller 200 with freakishly low hours on it as well as a 110v Mig/Flux Core machine I use when doing Mobile outside patches & repairs. I didnt even know they made innershield wire for Stainless Steel, any comments on this? i just have 4 bungs to weld on,so I dont want to buy a bunch of stuff thats going to sit around if the SS Fluxcore works acceptably. Thanks,Ace
Reply:I would use stick if you have access to one. You can get stainless electrode in small amounts.
Reply:I have the old Red Lincoln 220 Buzz Box. Does the Innershield not work well with the .250 tube? If I stepped the round tube down to 1.20 wall would you still go with stick? Its been years since I used stick, just like riding a bike, right? Ok,I have another question, will start another post so perhaps it may help others.Ace
Reply:Never used innershield for stainless. You said you didn't want to purchases much for a one off job. 3-32 inch electrode should be fine for what your doing.
Reply:Maybe I should have phrased that towards cost. The .035 SS wire for 2 lbs. is around 35.00,the small ARGON tank I have is around 20.00 to fill if I remember with SS wire for MIG around 27.00 for a small roll. Does the Gas/SS Wire setup work acceptably on the thinner stuff to your knowledge. I was under the impression the Innershield process was close to the same as with the sheild incorporated into the flux on the electrode? Sorry for the stupid questions,I just know technologies and materials have come quite a way since I last built a cage. I am looking for a Mid Level TIG with water cooled torch. Just tried to purchase one at the SEMA show that was just here and someone bought every machine in the Lincold & Miller Booths opening morning of the Show, thats a bummer because those were used at the convention for Demos a couple of days, have full  warranty and big time discounted. Craigslist in Vegas has some amazing deals with people losing thier butts gambling then selling tools to pay their rent,I am born & raised here ,and immune to the Gambling fever having observed this madness all my life. Thanks for your time ,I do appreciate it.Ace
Reply:First, stainless steel flux cored wire typically uses a 75% Argon / 25% Carbon Dioxide gas mixture, not pure Argon but always reference the manufacturer's specification. Secondly, solid wire stainless steel mig *ideally* uses a 90% Argon / 7.5% Helium / 2.5% Carbon Dioxide "tri-mix" shielding gas which is ungodly expensive due to the extremely high helium prices. Most of the time, solid wire stainless is run with a 98% Argon / 2% Oxygen (or 2% CO2) mix because of cost but no matter what, it really sucks! Best case scenario, Tig weld it (using pure Argon shielding gas) but sounds like you lack a Tig setup. You could stick weld it which would probably be the cheapest and stainless stick electrodes run great on either DC+ or AC current but seems like you aren't comfortable with your sick welding abilities..... If it were me, I would spend the money on a small roll of 0.030" stainless flux cored wire and exchange the Argon bottle for a 75/25 bottle (which could be used with carbon steel mig wire) and weld up whatever you need! -Hillbilly
Reply:Thanks Much, thats the route I am going to try ..
