This is for a timber bridge being installed at the new Boy Scout Jamboree center in southern West Virginia. These will connect a 7 1/2" column to a 16" glulam beam, with the tall ones used on a 24" glulam. Attached Images
Reply:Nice,I did some work with corten ,built a outdoor fireplace mounted through a concrete wall of a gazebo with 2 15' chimneys made of 6" corten as well. Did you stick weld these?
Reply:Yeah, just 7018. On a similar job I used 8018 C-3, as it is recommended for a better color match when doing multipass welds
Reply:Nice work. The scouts will be happy about those soldiers.Hey~!! It's a hobby. It's not supposed to make sense~!!
Reply:Funny thing about corten, if you paint it it will rust out and rot like any other steel, it needs to rust over to keep itself from rusting out.
Reply:If you like corten you'll love the New River Gorge bridge.
Reply:Is this for a permanent structure or a Pioneering project/demonstration? If it is the second then as a former Scout Leader and Eagle Scout with Eagle Scout sons That's cheating! The boys should build it using ropes not steel connectors. That is what pioneering is all about- lashings, pulleys, ropes and other engineering skills. That being said the steel will have less give and not as much constant upkeep (tightening), but not much in the way of teaching. Yes I have allowed my inner nerd to escape.A man needs to know his limitations!
Reply:Pioneering?? I thought the mention of glulam beams would've tipped you off. These will be for a bridge near the Eastern Arena at the Summit Bechtel Reserve, Installed before the scouts even get there. And yes I love the New River Gorge Bridge. Drive over it daily and paddled under it over a thousand times.
