buying my first engine drive welder

i am looking at buying a miller bobcat 250 with the contractor box and miller 3545 spool gun.  does anyone on this forum use this setup?  is it good or junk?

Reply:I don't know what kind of work you're planning on doing with it and I don't have anything against them but.......I'm working in Wyoming right doing pipelining and if someone showed up with a bobcat they would be the laughing stock.
Reply:If you plan on using it for farm work or hobby type around the house stuff it is ok, but if you plan to use it professionally you need a trailblazer (275 or 300). If you want a pro quality 250 amp machine go with the Ranger 250 from Lincoln. I used a couple of Bobcats years ago and wouldn't give you a plugged nickle for them (I must add so you know I am not predjudiced I have a Miller XMT 304 that I really really like, and the smoothest shop machine I ever used was a 250 amp Miller - remanufactured by Lincoln, LOL). I grew up welding with Lincoln SA 200's and have an Eagle 10,000 right now and as far as I am concerned it is an SA 200. It welds just like it. On my truck I have a GX271. Looks like a Ranger 10,000, but is a Ranger 305.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.

Reply:The Eagle 10,000 is a bare bones DC/CC machine rated at 210 amps at 100% duty cycle. I got this one at Sam's club. It's a machine Lincoln builds for what they call retail. I've put over 600 hours on it running everything from 3/32 6010 to 5/32 7024. All it does on the big stuff is grunt like an SA 200. Controls are the same style setup as the sa 200, coarse control but only 3 ranges, and a fine control. You can get one new for around 23-2400 bucks. I haven't found it in the Lincoln catalog, but still see them for sale from some of the online welding supplies.The difference between art and craft is the quality of the workmanship. I am an artist.
