Hey guys I always have problems mount hinges perfectly straight with out binding, what methods do you guys use when mounting hinges? Thanks for any help
Reply:what type hinges? Barrel or leaf hinges. What are you hanging? For barrels I mount on channel (barrels between flanges). I can use the square edges of the channel for references. For gates I locate hinges on gate prior to leaving shop. Weld the other part on post in field. leaf hinges I just use a speed square to make reference marks. Sometimes I use a level if things are upright already.
Reply:For smaller projects using old door hinges I have knocked out the pins and run a rod thru 1/2 of the hinges connecting them. The rod lines them up and I tack them on the door. Reinstall the other halves and locate the door and tack there. Seems to work well for me.
Reply:Just reference the pivots or hinge body parallel with each other in-line. Most barrel hinges don't have a "true" mounting plate so you have to reference the body in-line.

Reply:Thanks for all the help guys, I'll have to try all these ideas out
Reply:Use the smallest tacks that will hold while testing the fit. Only fully weld once it's perfect. Other than that, I'm not going to post a hundred ideas when the question is that general. |
