My friend has a crane sitting on his property, but neither him or I can figure out how to bring it down without it crashing... Any assistance with this would much be appreciated. Attached ImagesCommon sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.

Reply:Looking at the last picture, my best guess is that a manual winch was removed between the two items with the torch cut ends. I would think a winch or maybe just a shaft with pulleys or drums running through the pipe looking sleeves. Perhaps some cable looped around the boom leg, wind it up, take out the pins, slowly unwind to make it fold. Reply:Looks like it should fold back onto that saddle on the back of the cab, I'd also like to see a pic from a bit further back from the side.  Does the crane swing or is it just a stiff leg off the back?- If you can jump across it you can weld it!  - anonymous old boilermaker
Reply:Can you operate the winch?Maybe lay it all the way down first and then disconnect the pins and winch it back up?More pics!

Reply:The boom is actually designed to fold ahead and over the cab.You could use a tag line wrapped around the (whatever the correct term is)  to brake it.Are you trying to remove the boom, or lower it to move the truck?If the truck doesn't run you could s-l-o-w-l-y turn the winch drive manually.Or maybe wave down the local wrecker?What cooks here anyway? Reply:The old jin pole booms. Real scary. With the end of the winch cable hooked to back of the truck you take up the winch till the boom rocks up into those two saddles. Then pull those pins that hold the two rear booms ridged and move those to the two saddles.  Maybe some more take up on the winch and then some where in there the jin poles rock over center towards the cab side and you have to start letting out again to let it on down. That snap over center was always a piece of art work only the old pros could pull off with regularity. That's the general concept on those anyway. This one might have it's own unique tweeks but it'll be something similar. Only the old timers knew how to make them work. Kids like me just watched in awe.

Reply:I wonder, if when the two poles are pulled to their vertical point, to be pinned in the saddles, if the pinned part of the third pole drops down to allow the holes to line up the hole in the end o the flat bar with the two holes lower down and then that pin is transferred too. Reply:If you had access front and back, you could hook chains to 2 vehicles and just "drive" it down.  One backs up one goes forward.No access-- use 2 sets of chains.  One with a come along hooked to it, and one to take the load while you reset the come along to lower it again after the travel runs outJust a thought.  I don't have my pic program up and running yet or I'd put up a drawingI raised and lowered the boom on a backhoe this way once.  It had no power, thus no hydraulics.  It's a slow go but it works"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Any old water pump guys/well drillers in your area?  Should be a piece of cake for them ...Sandy got it right, I've seen it done many times in years past.   But there's another step in there, after you pin the lower part, and pull the connecting pins out, to keep the top part from crashing down on the cab after it goes over-center.  Can't remember ...Last edited by mark8310; 02-10-2009 at 10:45 AM.
Reply:I had the back legs pinned to the supports when I pulled the pins, but it started to look like it was going to crush the cab so I backed off and re pinned them again.. I'll try to get more photos in a few days.  The truck does run and the winch works fine.  The periscope is a strange option, but you can see pretty good with it from the driver seat.  I'm not sure what year it is.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:What is missing is the cross bar and large pulley that mounts in the round opening on those support brackets ,  then it would lower the same way that Irish and bob do it. You may have to lay it down to the rear to separate the center pole so it will fold. Of course there is the chance this was cobbled together and is no longer able to lay down.The periscope  marks it as an old telephone or electric truck.
