Hi , been looking at buying a new 250 amp mig welder.About had it narrowed down the the Lincoln PM 256.A coworker recommended Esab. He said his previous employer had a Migmaster 250 and it was a good welding machine.I looked at the 280 and it has a higher duty cycle than the Lincoln 256.Does Esab rank up there with the Millers and Lincolns? Thanks for any replies and thoughts.                                                                                                         Glenn

Reply:Worldwide ESAB is Lincoln's biggest competitor.
Reply:A place I worked had about 15 ESAB 260's. I like them, a decent stick welder and DC TIG capable. I've also used older 250's and they worked well.Leo
Reply:if your lucky you can find a used esab migmaster 250 for around 250-600 dollars. I have seen them.
Reply:When ESAB discontinued their USA built units like the Migmaster 250 and Migmaster 275, and started importing the European built 280 the wire drive took a step backwards. The 250 and the 275 have a dual driven drive roll system; whereas, the 280 has a single driven lower drive roll. The single driven system is going to more prone to having feeding issues, especially with a 15 ft gun lead. The Lincoln PM 256 has a dual driven drive roll system that is superior to wire drive of the ESAB 280. If this unit is for home use, I wouldn't be concern with  the duty cycle of  the PM 256, MM 252, or ESAB 280. The duty cycle on all three of these units is going to be more than adequate for home use. The wire drive would be far more important to me than some additional duty cycle.Personally, I'd go with the PM 256 that you were planning on purchasing, even over a Millermatic 252. The 252 arc is just to soft for my taste.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice

Reply:You should look at the HTP 2400 it has a very heavy duty drive and seems to be a good unitSent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2

Prior to this it was a dual driven system , and after this brief time frame the wire drive was converted back to a dual driven system. The unit main drawback is the fact that the cooling fan produces a lot of noise- moves a lot of air.

Reply:I've used a MultiMaster 260, but only in MIG. It was definitely one of the best mig welders I've ever run.

Reply:ESAB is showing 40 amps as the minimum low end on the 280. Lincoln is stating 30 amps for the low end on the PM 256. This should translate (not 100% guaranteed)  into the  PM 256 being the better .023 thin ga sheet metal unit.Since discussion of the Migmaster 250 has entered this thread, I'll add that I  can dial my Migmaster 250 down to 25 amps or even slightly less. This would be with an .023 wire and C25. The arc down this low is very smooth and gentle. One of the best low ends I've seen.ESAB Migmaster 250 Hobart Ironman 230Multimatic 215TWECO Fabricator 181i & 211iHH125EZ - nice little fluxcore only unitMaxstar 150 STH - very nice
Reply:Just from seeing the inside of the feeders on our our big esab welders at work. No I wouldn't suggest buying a unit for the shop at home. To me they look like they were built as cheap as possible. The entire wire roll holder  is almost all plastic and the drive rolls and components in the feeder just look weak. I guess i'm also someone who buy's as much as possible that is still US made as well.Miller Bobcat 250Westinghouse ac arc welderIts better to be hated for who you are than liked for who your not.
Reply:I have a ESAB Mig master 250 I believe it welds just as good as any other welders although if I need parts it’s like trying to get a bill passed through congress! I would by a Miller or Lincoln. When I call for a liner for the esab they say no BUT we have them for the Lincolns and milers.
Reply:Parts are harder to find...but still available. The industrial units are pretty hardcore....I have a SVi 450i multiprocess and it is built like a tank. If you can find a good deal it may be worth it. One thing I like is that their 3 phase stuff usually has single phase capabilities...vs. the red and blue stuff which is pretty much 3ph only. You get a lot of bang for your buck that way, but some of the lower-amperage red/blue stuff have nice features such as soft start, etc.  I am still playing around with things though and am pretty much a rookie...the older industrial units have more options, such as inductance....most of the newer Millers/Lincolns have taken a lot of the guessing out of things and just have 2 knobs and preset taps....the rest is handled internally. I like the easy way sometimes....but since I am learning about welding out of my own curiosity, I appreciate the extra adjustability and learning about what each setting does. It's kind of confusing, but I think it'll make me more savvy in the long run.Last edited by ScubaSteve; 03-05-2013 at 07:53 PM.

Reply:I can get any Esab part here, that is available anyway ... Takes a bit to get the hang of the site, but they do get it for you. Generally the best prices overall. http://www.weldingsupply.com/cgi-bin/browsecatalogs.plScott gross you need to click USPS to get decent shipping.. They just shipped out my order of a couple guide tubes, 2 inlet guide, and an .023/.030 V groove drive roll. I already have one .023/.030 drive roll. I am going to experiment and see if I can use the second  one to replace the upper smooth pressure roller.http://www.scottgrossstore.com/servlet/StoreFrontTo find an item I am looking for, I just type in the part #, in the keyword / part # search box.
Reply:They have the best customer service I have ever called.  I looking for a service center to get my machine tuned up and the guy I talked to called to find out if I was able to find the certified service and was checking on the progress of the unit.  The unit needed a new main amp selector switch.  I can't wait to get it back and see her running wire again.
Reply:I forgot to add the feeder is made of plastic, but has held up on my unit and the ones I have welded with.  The esab migmaster is a battle tank
Reply:I think it's a given that ESAB is a proven, reliable and good machine.  I don't understand however why anyone in the States would buy a product where their main support is in Europe?  Why not stick with Red, Tan and Blue (Lincoln, Hobart and Miller) where parts, service and support is that much easier here in the USA???   Sure, ESAB has a satellite office in South Carolina and I believe Pennsylvania, but Miller and Lincoln are "diseased" all over the USA. Every LWS carries Red, Tan or Blue components.  Not so for Yellow (ESAB).  Why make it even slightly harder on yourself, when "simple" is that much hassle free. Sometimes its fine when it gets a few curves, but then it will go to hell, have to straighten the whip and adjust the roller tension to get her purring again. What should i do man?        thermal arc 252i  -  millermatic 350P -   miller XMT, cp300ts, 30a 22a feeders, buttload of other millers, handfull of lincolns, couple of esabs  -   Hypertherm 1250 G3
Reply:How old is the liner? What size liner and what size wire?  When was the last time you cleaned the feed tube?  That is the tube from the rollers to the whip. What size is it?  When was the last time you changed the drive rolls?  When you run a lot is hard wire they get peened and wallow out. The last would be the tension of the wire spindle. It is like chasing a ghost and can be aggravating.
Reply:I forgot to add pull your liner and make sure it hasn't been kinked.  I had a new liner get kinked somehow in a miller unit years ago.  Took me forever cause I just knew the new liner wasn't the problem, but it was
