Any of you guys do portable align boring?

I'm interested in purchasing a portable align boring machine, and doing some research on what type/brand of machine i might like.  As of right now there is only one John Deere dealer, and a couple of Cat dealers that offer this service, and they are all 50 miles or more away, and EXTRMELY pricey.   Not to mention with the amount of equipment being used in this area I could really justify the machine.  if any of you have any experience with this I would love to hear your thoughts or opinions.  Thanks.  ~JacksonI'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......

Reply:Yea, I have looked at that site as well Tozzi, they are sending me a quote actually.  I have a good friend who is a retired machinist.  He owned and ran a large tool and die machine shop, and still has his shop he just plays now though.  He's got a highschool education, but probably forgotten more about machining then most of us will ever know.  He always lets me use his shop if I have a job that I don't have the capabilities for, and he told me today that He has built a few setups over the years, and would help me put one together if I wanted to.  I've never known anything he did to not be as exact as you could get it.  Considering all I'll have in it is the materials I may just build one, but i'm still looking around to see what I like.I'm a Lover, Fighter, Wild horse Rider, and a pretty good welding man......
Reply:The guy I know that line bores heavy equipment gets $90 an hour. All things considered it is a bargan, 35,000 in tools is not a small nut to crack. The set up I want is about 20K but can be leased. I have been fighting myself over it for about a year now.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:Not to slow down your thread, but what is a portable align boring machine and what does it do?  I am familiar with line boring machines in cabinet shops...

Reply:OOOPs, Forgot to mention that I do quite a bit of line boring. I have done everything from skid steers to 500 ton cranes. It is also very useful if you build anything with bosses. Turn them out a little under size weld them in and them line bore them. Makes for a very nice fit. Their are a lot of options. Buying the boring bars and welder are just the start. I have driven the bars with right angle drives, driveshafts, geared head motors, even have an adapter to use a portable pipe threading drive. The nice thing about this is most of it is done in the winter months when other things are slow.

Reply:there is an outfit in austrailia that builds an awesome unithoffman engineeringdont know what they cost but i have seen both the climax and the bortechunits , and while they are both excellent the hoffman is a step abovei would suggest if starting out you build your own boring unit and weld the bores up manually. if it turns out to be steady business then go all in on the equipment. The bore welded is where the real time savings come in. especcially on badly egg shaped bores.
