I am looking for a straight six flathead engine to put in an old tractor.  I am looking for one with 265cid.  IND 265 should be stamped in top of block near head.  A plus if the head has the word Spitfire cast into it.  Possibly used in Hobart 200/300/400A and other brands of welders.  Any tips would be appreciated.  Not running is fine. Thanks a lot,Mark

Reply:i have that motor, its sitting in a 41 coupe.i'll be taking it out in the spring, will be installing a hemi instead.its a flathead/spitfire,don't know if it runs or not just got the car a week ago but its all there .
Reply:Thanks den rep, it is the thought that counts.  From what I know the chrysler straight six does have the oil pump sticking out of the lower part of the block.  The dristributor is also on the side of the block a little higher.  Seems like they put a few more cubes in the Chrysler marine, I would be alrigth with that, but the Continental part raises a few problems. Thanks,Mark
Reply:matts dad,  Doesn't matter if the engine runs or not, I like rebuilding engines as much as using them.  Where are you located and what do you want for the engine.  (You can put that in an E-mail if you prefer - [email protected])  If you get a chance see if you can read the numbers on the top corner of the engine block, the part number off of the head would also be a big help.  Will the Hemi bolt to the transmission or is that going to get an update as well? Thanks,Mark

Reply:yep.i know nothing from the old will work with the new.its ok,for right now i'm planning on a new computer motor and trans.that might change when i get the old stuff out and take some measurments.i figure its about a 3 year project, complete frame off custom.i will try and post some pics.
Reply:If you need help with that "new computer motor" give me a shout, I'm very knowledgable regarding the new motors and also have tuning software.  I'll post pics of a recently finished customer project. Reply:denrep,  I have heard about the tank and I believe they have one in Michigan at the Chrysler museum.  Think they would miss one?  It would be something to be a mechanic for one of those tanks, how could you tell if it was missing on one of the thirty cylinders?Mark
Reply:I have a chrysler straight 8 that was running several years ago.It has a hand clutch and pto shaft on the back end.The block has a crack on the side that was very professionally repaired with a gasketed plate and a lot of small screws a long time ago.I live in West Texas.
Reply:happysmith,  Thanks for the offer, but the straight eight would be too long and I am afraid people would notice that the tractor has two extra cylinders. Thanks,Mark

Reply:Thanks for the info Roy.  I have a 251cid out of a combine but I would like to have the bigger engine if I am going to do the work of rebuilding it.  Do you know the model of cars that they put the 265 in?I have found some school busses and trucks with the straight six, but they have the shorter block. Thanks,Mark
Reply:ok,heres the numbers again off the top of the head:889847-2thats all i could find until i steam clean the engine some more.hope this helps....
Reply:Thanks matts dad.I will see if Egge Machine can tell me the displacement of your engine.Merry ChristmasMark
Reply:matts dad,  According to Egge machine your spitfire head was used on Chrysler cars from 1938-41 on 241 cubic inch engines and in Desoto cars from 1942-49 on 236 cubic inch engines.   Looks like you have a 241 cubic inch engine.  Thank you very much for letting me know about your engine and for getting the numbers for me, but I already have a 251 cubic inch engine and am hoping to find the larger 265.Happy Holidays,Mark
Reply:Mark,A friend of mine Charle Talbert has a bidness in NC, he restores Military vehicles, such as the Dodge M-37. A lot of his work involves engine swapsflat head 6's diesels, 4bt & 6bt's I think? Anyways he ends up with a lot of gassers for sale, give him a shout, good guy & very good mechanic, could palletize & ship an engine anywhere, I sure? www.mseriesrebuild.com    Seasons Greetings,Bruce The Welding ChefLincoln Weld-Pack 3200 NORWELD StickStanford Hill Farm

Reply:Thanks for all the tips everybody.  I found a 265CID straight six chrysler in an old Dodge truck (job rated) from the early 50s.  Egge told me from the head number that it was a 236 CID engine, but I wanted the transmission attached to it so I bought it.  I measured the engine out of curiosity and it happened to be the big one.  I found a couple Hobart Brothers welders with the 25.5" long block, but the engines were stuck so I could not tell the displacement.  An expert told me that the fuel pump can be removed and if you are lucky you can see the crank end of the rod.  The 265 is noticably ground to make clearance for the cam and block.  The bolt heads on the connecting rods are also flat where on the 251 and 236 the heads are angled on both sides.    I will post some pics as the tractor comes together. Thanks,Mark
