Im starting a bicycle project, and was wondering what filler rod I should be using. The project will be done with oxyacetylene if it makes any difference.4130 is the base material.
Reply:Do you want to braze or gas weld?
Reply:Fusion welding-RG45 or RG60Fillet Brazing-Allstate 11B using a good flux like allstate 1113 or Harris 600Lug-Harris Safety silv 45 or equivenent using stay silv white or black flux or equivelent
Reply:RG45 would be a good choice and for some folks somewhat easier to get nice welds with than RG60 and RG60 is probably not necessary for your purpose.
Reply:I will be gas welding, it is a mountain bike which will take heavy abuse. A rod that is easy to work with would be desired.
Reply:What tube set are you going to use? 26 or 29 inch wheels? Is this your first frame?
Reply:Hmmm I am having trouble understanding what you mean by "easy to use". When it comes to fusion welding, the choice of filler will usually have little impact on "ease" of welding provided you use one specific for O/A welding ( I.E. RG45, RG60 or RG65 ). RG45 tends to be more fluid, but RG60 might be better suited for the joint styles on a frame. Practice with 45 since its cheap, then when you get that down, try 60 and see how you like it.
Reply:Thanks for the help.Zank - yes it is my first frame, 26" wheels.
Reply:I had good results with brazing heat treated 4130 thin wall tubing. It's a nice looking bike. It is probably easier than other processes, but requires a fair bit of cleanup.SqWave 200Millermatic 190Airco 200 ACHypertherm PM45Boice-Crane Band SawVictor O/A |
