Reply:I don't think you will find a decent combination set used unless it comes from an estate sale.  If it is in good condition it will be in use by a living person.  I have found that machinist quality combination sets run around 150 Canadian.  There is an alternative which is ideal for fitting welded assemblies.  There are chinese import sets available for less than 50 Canadian from the local discount tool suppliers.  I avoid the cheaper sets with aluminum heads because they do not stand up to full time use.
Reply:Thanks for the input. Can anyone suggest a decent quality brand to look for, price range around $50? I'm not a machinist, just need one for layout. Most of the machinists at my work use Starretts, but they are about $200.
Reply:I bought a new Starrett set in about 1976, and I still use it every day.So on a dollar per day basis, it was pretty cheap. And it is well made enough that I still enjoy it every time I pick it up.A new Starrett set is 163 bucks for the cast type, from MSC.But all good ones cost a lot-The Mitutoyo sets are 185, and the PEL brand, made in Poland, are 135.Check out MSCdirect.com under combination squares, they have a range of good quality ones, including the Starretts.I agree, its hard to find a used one- But if you do, Lufkin, Brown and Sharpe, Starrett, or Mitutoyo would be the brands I would trust buying used.I have bought tons of Starrett stuff at garage sales and flea markets- and while I often find deals on more technical measuring tools, ( I recently bought a 250 dollar angle gage for under 5 bucks) the combination squares are never cheap, even used.
Reply:I've had a Starrett square for over 30 years.  It has the forged steel head and just as accurate now as when I bought it.
Reply:If your still looking for a combo sqaure check out  enco.com they have the high dollar stuff as well as american and import lower end stuff...id hit ya with a price but everytime i get a catalog someone at work scifes it.!!@#!!
