Hey have any of you bought tools or welding equipment from Ebay seller Tools Unlimited ?    I just won an auction for a new Miller plasma cutter for about 1/3 of the typical selling price.  If any of you have bought from Tools Unlimited, if you can give me their address and phone number and the name of the person in charge there I would really appreciate it.  I want to make sure I don't send money to an Ebay hacker for a bogus auction and end up never recieving the goods....  There were several other auctions up by that seller that all ended at the same time and some big dollar equipment went for rediculusly low prices... a Lincoln Ranger GXT engine driven welder, a Lincoln Ranger 10,000, a Lincoln V205 TIG welder and a Miller Trailblazer engine driven welder all sold for less than a grand each! Thanks!
Reply:He didn't have a picture, I bet that scares away some bidders. It looks like he has nearly all positive feedback, looks promising so far....- John
Reply:There were no pictures on any of the questionable auctions but all his other auctions have pics and reasonable Buy It Now prices, no bidding.    The questionable ones were all open bid auctions with no reserve.   I'm not saying that Tools Unlimited is an unreputable seller at all.  My suspicion is his account has been hacked.  I would like to talk to him personally before sending any money.   If any of you have dealt with him in the past and have contact info for him from previous dealings, I would like to talk to him to verify  if the auction was legit.  If the payment info I recieve from this auction is different than payment info others have recieved in past dealings where they recieved the item they bought, then that points to this being a fraudulent auction probably posted by someone who hacked his account.   All it takes is one unlucky person to send the hacker money and he has accomplished his task.  I dont want to be that unlucky person that pays for a machine and never gets it, as well as contributing to some theif's scam.  If the auctions were legit and the seller paid the going wholesale price for those machines, he likely lost money on almost all of them.  I dont think any of those machines sold for more than 75% of the typical retail prices and many sold for less than half.   Most of the internet sellers of welding equipment probly aren't making a big mark-up on the machines so I really question that a smart seller would put a bunch of high ticket machines up for open auction at the same time with no reserve to cover his butt in case they sold for less than cost.   Of course, maybe he was banking on them going for more than retail, as does happen often in auctions....  One important thing I noticed when I visited the sellers online store was, in his other auctions, the item location is listed as Toledo Ohio and in the payment section he states that Ohio residents must pay sales tax.  On the questionable ones, the location is listed as Peoria Illinois and no mention of sales tax is made.   That raises a flag in my mind right there.   There were about 15 bidders and 42 bids on the auction I won, if I remember right.  Not one person bid even close to what the machine was worth.   Mine was about half what the going price is for that machine and the only reason I bid that low was cause I placed that bid in the last 10 seconds of the auction while the other active bidders were playing around with one-upping eachother by 10 or 20 bucks and the most recent bid was way lower than mine.   My sniper strategy usually pays off, as it did this time, but I'm reluctant to send money if I cant verify the validity of the auction.   I've yet to be truely burned on ebay.  Dont want this to be the first.
Reply:Seems that even if it was a hacked account, you'd still think it would have gotten bid up to a reasonable level... know what I mean? Unless *all* bidders were equally suspicious and it held the price down.Well best of luck, you are wise to be cautious. My wife had a similar deal when she won a flat-panel monitor at then-unheard-of prices. Several confusing emails from the seller later, as well as the request to be paid via western union wire transfer, confirmed it was a scam.Hope it all works out and is a legit auction. I looked at some of his completed items, and the only things I found were dewalt drills and a chop saw. i.e. no big-ticket welders. But then I only looked at a few.best of luck,John
Reply:No longer a registered user....hacked account. Hope you didn't send your money!
Reply:Bruceb, nope, haven't sent any money, doesn't appear I will need to now....  Thanks for the heads-up too!   Runchman, looks like same thing here as what happened to your wife... Ebay sent a message to me saying all the auctions and bids have been canceled and they suspect the sellers account was hacked into and used fraudlently.   Hope they catch the theif!   Also hope all the other auction winners were as suspicios as I was!   Most of the suspicios auctions were for high-dollar welding machines...  I hope none of my fellow welders out there got burned!
Reply:Oh I forgot...Moral of this story is (as always):  If it appears too good to be true, it probly isn't....
Reply:I noticed that guy last night, and he had stuff for sale from California, Ohio, Nev.   all of it extremely low prices. Glad I didn't bite ! I got ripped off for $500 on a camera 2 years ago, the guy collected up a bunch of monet mostly from toys at Christmas, and skipped the country back to China. Luckly paypal covered most of the loss. Not a beginner, not a pro !
Reply:Rule of thumb...if they ask for Wesern Union or ask you to contact them through a seperate email address rather than going though Ebay, something is wrong. Also, look to see if the seller has sold anything like this before and has received positive feedback for a similar item. This doesn't always work because they generate fake feedabck by winning auctions from themselves and leaving themselves feedback. If you win an auction for a high price item, use the information request feature to get a phone number to talk to the seller. This way, you can see if the area code matches the location in the advertisement.Tell the seller, you have a friend in the area that will go look at the item before you send payment.
