To be fair, my deck should not go all the way up to the fence line. Something I found later. Because it does, I can easily look over the 6' privacy fence into my neighbors side yard. They don't seem to mind as there isn't much over there anyway. Unfortunately, my neighbor uses it as a dumping ground for all sorts of stuff. I am tired at looking at it. I want to build a privacy screen/wall from the fence up to the bottom of the pergola... or close to it. Wind can be a concern, so it can't be a solid wall. I was thinking about some fancy wrought iron type stuff, and then planting vines on either side of it and let it fill in all of the gaps. I don't want to do just a lattice work.I though a combo of wood and steel would look nice, but I am looking for some ideas. I have googled it, but haven't found anything I really like yet. Thought I would hit you guys up for some ideas. Perhaps one of you have created something similar to this?Anyway, in the panorama shot the distance from the huge bush on the left to the tree (which is about the area I wish to block out) is around 20-25' Attached ImagesThe Lord has declared, "This is my work and my glory--to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man" Moses 1:39Link: My name is John, and I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.-- ColdCreekWorks.com --

Reply:if the fence and pergola weren't all white I'd say do a wood/wrought Iron screen. but since it is, I would stick to that color. which really kills the wood/wrought Iron look. Personally I hate the lattice look.I'd probably do an ornate Iron screen painted or powdercoated white to match the rest of the surrounding walls/pillars.There are no problems. There was posting on one of my ranch/garden boards where the guy did exactly what you described and it looked really nice. I'll see if I can find it.

Reply:Who's fence is it, yours or his ?What are the regulations on height restrictions in your area ?They may also specify materials too.How about home-owners associations, do you have to deal with that nonsense ?Maybe you just need to get your own junk so you don't covet his so much. Or turn your chairs to face the other way.Trellis and vines, but they take time to grow.Trees take a long time to grow and consume space as they grow in diameter. There are woven tarp like fabrics which are made for outdoor exposure ie Sunbrella® Awning fabricThey let through wind and some light; and will come in white which seems important to fit in.If you put that from tall post to tall post, it would at least cover your deck seating area.Last edited by 12345678910; 06-28-2013 at 11:47 PM.

Reply:I would go with some sort of design(weather it be deer in the wood or a Smiley face or whatever you like) cut out on a solid sheet. Enough cut out to get the design and let wind through but enough to block the view.PROUD AMERICAN
Reply:It doesn't answer your original question, but i would try getting the city to intervene and force him to clean it up. MOST cities have ordinances about that sort of thing. Tell them that you have seen vermin in the area and it is posing a health risk. They'll be all over it. I know it sux to have to do that to a neighbor, but its also pretty crappy of him to do that to you, too.

Reply:I watched a "Holmes on Homes" show a while back, he did an entire apartment complex back yard fence, the bottom six feet of the fence was staggered fence panel, and the top 2 feet he cocked the filler slats at a 45deg. angle (vertical louver I guess) with like a 2 inch gap between them.. It looked nice when he was done..Of course Holmes built it with all 2x6's, he builds stuff spectacularly stout... I think you do need a taller fence, at least 6ft, and I would want 8ft with that window up there, thats kind of odd, is that some kind of vent or is it a window? Something else you could do is attach one of those bamboo shades on your deck roof... That would look nice actually, plus you could roll it up during storms.. probably cheap too. I bet if you called a cop out there he could get some information for you. Tell him you dont want him to do anything, you just want information for your own interests.. When I lived in town you couldnt have any junk within 6 ft of your fence, you couldnt have junk laying around, no immobile cars for more than 30 days, yada, yada. Reply:Since you acknowledged that the deck should not have gone as far as it did and building off of an existing fence can be rather difficult between actually mounting it to the existing fence, getting permission and going through HOAs. It could be a long process.I would build off of the last column on your deck. To get the height desired, add some of your ornamental creations. Nice work by the way . Or, find some other ornamental fencing.Who cares if you lose a foot of deck space, you'll have the privacy desired and it will look nice on both sides AND the neighbor cant mess it because its on your property.Just a thought.
Reply:Could fill the gap with a Flat panel TV or projection TV.
Reply:Is that wood or composite? You could do vertical slats -- something like what Oldendum posted, but rotated 90°. I think the uneven widths gives it some variety (and is a little more forigiving, as wood ages or composite heats/cools), but parallel slats evenly spaced would also look okay, I think.Shade fabric is also an option. So long as your side has more light than his, you won't be able to see through it (keep in mind that he will be able to see through to your side, though, if that bugs you). Now personally, I won't judge your neighbor at all. My back yard went south in a hurry as I worked on my garage. It reached a point where I think even your neighbor might have complained about it. But I turned it around this Spring. I got rid of the lattice on top of the fence, moved it up, put slate stone below and used shade fabric up above. The fabric is interesting because you can see through it in some conditions and not see through it in others. Pictures kind of mask the effect, but even so, you can see the trees in this daytime picture. While at night, the light just reflects back and it feels a lot more enclosed. But again, if there were any neighbors able to look down through the 'roof' of my structure, then I'd be very visible at night.Last edited by Jack Olsen; 06-29-2013 at 08:15 PM.Jack OlsenMy garage website

Reply:jdh239I only see two possibilities.Take the fence down entirely so your neighbor can see how people live on the other side of the tracks; or utilize the asset - and start adding to their pile. If theycomplain, tell them that they are just reaping interest on their investment.Opus
