I'm applying for the apprentice program at NNSY. Anyone got any experience with the program there or working there? Any advice from anyone? I worked for a few months spray arcing frack tanks. Hoping for general welding but would go for sheet metal, peyote fitting or boilermaker.

Reply:Just curious... is peyote fitting in any way similar to pipe fitting? Or is this just a new craft I haven't heard of yet?

Reply:Dang autocorrect. Why it choose peyote I have no idea. And yes that's what I'm speaking of. I thought about looking at other apprentice programs if I don't get into NNSY
Reply:I'm getting into the same program up here in maine- just want to let you know it's a looong process. I applied last year, my tentative start date now is january 12. The start date in the announcement was sept-october. There's just a lot that needs to happen before you can start. For the process: If you haven't been in school for awhile grab one of the 5 dollar practice accuplacer tests. I know I'm glad I did- it's amazing how much math you forget if you haven't been using it, and refreshing my memory was very helpful. The interview is with a panel of workers from the yard, they're going to want to get a feel for your personality and why you want to get into the trade you chose (pick your top 3- I didn't know that part ahead of time, so I got to feel like an ******* when I said welder for first choice, then anything mechanical, then anything electrical). There are more details on all of the trades here: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-over...#url=StandardsOnce you get your tentative offer, start gathering the stuff you need for your security clearance ahead of time. You only have a week after they ask to fill out the online form, but trust me- it is very stressful to try to get all that information in a week. Here's a paper version of the form: http://www.opm.gov/forms/pdf_fill/sf86.pdf
Reply:I've already taken the test. Did well. That's helpful about the panel. I know I want welder boilermaker or pipe fitter though. And I've got my background check from when I was in so it should only take an update. Thanks for the info though |
