I'm trying to figure out how to get more narrow beads. If I do a smaller weave, they build up too much. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  This is my vertical up MIG.  18V 225 WFS. Attached Images

Reply:Settings look close to what we use on 1/8" with 92/8 and .035 solid wire. Knowing all your info would help. One thing I see is your motions could be tightened up. When you move up a large distance with each motion, you have to move slower so the material can build up to fill in between motions. If you keep your vertical travel small with each motion, you don't need to deposit as much material with each pass, thus you can make your beads smaller. The other issue I usually see with new guys learning vertical is that they haven't yet learned to read the puddle. This is the key to vertical and overhead. You can get by doing "timing patterns" on flat and horizontal, but that almost never works on vertical. To show this I do really massive weaves, I want the student to be able to carefully watch the puddle chase the arc and watch me pause for the puddle to catch up to the arc. When they say they can see this, I do the run again, but 1/2 as wide. If they say they can still see this, I'll go smaller again. until I'm at my "normal" size. At that point I'm often just doing a tiny wiggle from side to side and my movement up is probably less than a 1/32" with each motion. At this rate most students can't see me hesitate and "wait" for the puddle to catch up. In reality I almost don't have to stop because the puddle is so close behind me..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Thanks y'all.
Reply:Well that's an easy one.. Just use smaller wire!! Lol but for real.... Dsw hit the nail on the head, small fast motions and a sharp eye on the puddle will have you laying weaves like a razors edge in no time!!Real welders know how to penetrate!(Equipment)Whatever can be used to beat my opponent into submission!
