I am new to TIG welding and would like to know what this machine is good for.  It's a Buffalo Tools Tig NEWAWTIG130.  Is this thing limited to very thin pieces of metal, is it good for anything at all or should I not even bother with it and sell it?  ToolTopia sells it for about $400, here is the info on it:Input power 240 volt single phase 60 hzDC output amps 130 (Tig) 90 (Arc); 35% duty cycle 130 amp.Includes 9 foot tig torch, arc torch, arc welding rod holder, ground clamp, a gas hose, and carry handleElectrodes 1/16 in. TungstenLightweight, easy to carryTig Welder features: input power 240 volt single phase 60 hz; DC output amps 130 (Tig) 90 (Arc); 35% duty cycle 130 amp. Electrodes 1/16 in. Tungsten. It comes with a 9 foot tig torch, arc torch, arc welding rod holder, ground clamp, a gas hose, and carry handle. Lightweight, easy to carry.
Reply:Same specs as the HF ( Chicago Electric ) 130 tig 90 arc. Right down to the torch cable length. As for what it's good for the metal thickness chart is there. And it's a good starter I think. It's DC only so some limitations there. If you decide to get it we will find out what it's good for as I have the HF model and it was 229.00, And on sale at times for 199.00 I've seen.Miller Thunderbolt 225Millermatic 130 XPLincoln HD 100 Forney C-5bt Arc welderPlasma Cutter Gianteach Cut40ACent Machinery Bandsaw Cent Machinery 16Speed Drill PressChicago Electric 130amp tig/90 ArcHobart 190 Mig spoolgun ready
Reply:Welcome to the forum. Glad to have you with us.I agree that it would be "ok" at best, as a starter unit. My guess is its a scratch start tig. At 130 you will be limited to 1/8" max approximately. It's dc only so that means that alum is out.How about consumables, gas lenses, collets and such? Can you find them for this machine easily?Personally, its not a machine I would get. I'd sell it if you can find a buyer, and get a much better machine. I think you would be much better with a used econotig or syncrowave if on a budget.
Reply:Specifically the DC only wouldn't bother me.  I never have any interest in welding aluminum & most of the people I know don't have the ability to weld Aluminum either.  I guess it comes down to what you want to do with it.  I've always preferred the coil of metal wire rather than the rods for many reasons.  But no, it is not limited to thin pieces of metal, in the worst case you'd just have to weld over your weld to make it thicker.    -Welder Joe -TIG Welders & helmets
