So back in 2002 I was certified for 3 and 4 G, 7018 on 1" A36 plate.  My certs have since expired. I was looking into getting certified again.  With that said I was talking to a freind of mine and he told me as long as I have been welding since they have expired,  All's I need is my employer to sing the back of the cert and I would be good. That seemed kinda sketchy to me then I heard another guy tell me the same thing. Does anybody have any knowledge of this? I would think I would have to preform some sort of test for a CWI to get back into good standing. Thanks in advance for your help.
Reply:I'm thinking you'll get all kinds of answers on this.   A respectable common practice is, have the inspector from a job your on, stamp and update the back w/in every 6mo period from test date w/o lapse.     I'm not saying your idea won't work
Reply:I'm not trying to do anything shady, not by any means. I put a call into the company that certified me and the guy I spoke with also seemed to think a signature is all I need to put my certs back into good standings. Although he need to look into it and would call me back and let me know. I did not here back from him today. I am just anxious to know.
Reply:I hold a similar cert here in Canada with the CWB (Canadian welding bureau). My all position structural ticket with smaw is good for 2 years. Once it is expired, I'm not allowed to weld any structural code work. That's why I always go and do my check test a month or 2 before the ticket expires. Then I'm good for another 2 years.  You never want to let your tickets expire. I think your friend is leading you astray here.JasonLincoln Idealarc 250 stick/tigThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 52Miller Bobcat 250Torchmate CNC tableThermal Arc Hefty 2Ironworkers Local 720
Reply:You can easily find out if you contact the certifying authority.  Usually they are a phone call away.  There are literally hundreds of certification authorities around the world.  Maybe you are talking about a DNV certification or maybe you are certified for railway work?  Every code has different rules and unless you contact the office of whatever system you qualified under it is a waste of time.     As a side note I would not rely on an employer's word.  I have experienced one employer that had all the welders convinced that their qualifications was not transferable to other CWB certified shops. The employer also kept all the cards instead of photocopying and handing over to each welder.
Reply:We have a cert here, that you have to have to be dispatched out of the hall. It's a WABO card, has to be signed every 3-months, and you pay a fee to get a new card every year. Port of Seattle, Port of Tacoma, and others will only accept this cert. The US Navy laughs at this cert. You take their test, and pass or you don't weld at any of their facilities. I've been on Port of Seattle jobs where the welding inspector would not accept my WABO card because it was too old. Reply:Well hopefully I will get a call today from the company that certified me to let me know what I have to do.I dont do any work that really requires a certified welder, it was just more of a CYA thing. However if I do get my certs renewed it will definitely open more doors for me at work. I already had to pass up some work i was capable of doing because my certs where expired.
Reply:To what spec were you certified? AWS does not expire except for lack of continuity by 6 months. Mil-spec was usually 2 years. Also depends on who holds the paperwork. If it was your old employer, it does not tranfer anyway. If it was you and you can establish continuity, you are good to go. Have no clue about ASME.Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR" MillerDynasty700DX,Dynasty350DX4ea,Dynasty200DX,Li  ncolnSW200-2ea.,MillerMatic350P,MillerMatic200w/spoolgun,MKCobraMig260,Lincoln SP-170T,PlasmaCam/Hypertherm1250,HFProTig2ea,MigMax1ea.

Reply:Originally Posted by taz00According to ASME IX, certificates are valid as long as the welder has used the process(es) he is qualified for in the last 6 months under the supervision of the qualifying organization. In case his certificate has expired all he has to do is pass a test for the process he was qualified for (now here is the fun part ) welding a single coupon of any material, thickness, diameter in any position. So if you were qualified to TIG weld nickel alloys 10 years ago in a 6G position all you have to do is weld a carbon steel coupon in whatever position suits you and your certification is reinstated. As much as I like ASME IX, this among a couple other things, is one of the weirdest things I have encountered in a welding standard/code.
Reply:If it is an AWS "Cert" that you have and there is a way to trace through your time cards and job numbers back to the day of your test and prove that you have used the process once in any given six month period than you should be able to have it reinstated.  The AWS may not let you because the AWS didn't get their 10 bucks every six months.  If it was a qualification usually meaning internal within your company to one of their weldinig procedures it is a little different.  It is all about traceability and it depends on your employer's level of cool.If it is a qualification and is traceable to the day of testing then your employer can print you a document certifying that you have welded to the requirements of said code and maintained that qualification. They can even attach the welder qualification document that has your ranges of qualified variables. They may not do this because they invested the time and money for you to take the test and make money for them. Contrary to regular beliefe an employer can absolutely certify that you are qualified.  In this case the AWS does not maintain your cert for you for 20 bucks a year.  That is the only difference. This also does not mean you have to pass a test every six months.  Just that you used the process.  This can be running a flat stringer surface bead on the weld bench, if you should choose to be so bold.Hope I helped.  Good Luck-Jesse
Reply:So after speaking with the CWI, as long as I can provide him with a letter of continuity singed by my supervisor stating that I have been welding the entire time, I could get my certs re-stamped. I have provided the letter now I am just waiting to see if he will stamp them or if I need to run a bead for him. now we play the waiting game.
Reply:Provided the CWI with my certs and a letter of continuity singed by my supervisor.  He stamped and singed my certs no questions asked. I am now up to date.
