Tig rod grinder

With the recommendation and all the comments to use a dedicated grinder for tig rods as one way to assure the best possible welds I decided to go ahead and make the investment in such a device.  To help dicipline myself to not use it for anything else and prevent having to dedicate a larger unit to the task I picked up a little mini tool grinder from HF that doesn't have the power to grind anything much bigger than a tig rod to begin with.  Don't quite know what to do with the polishing wheel side yet and thinking of fabricating a guide for the rod to help with shape consistancy. Reply:I wouldn't worry about fabricating anything for that.  Just mount it and use a small cordless drill to spin your tungsten while you grind it.  You will find that you get pretty good at judging the angle by eye.  Just make sure that you have the room to grind longitudinally.Proud to be self-employed and not have to rely on ANYONE but me to make my way in this world.Dynasty 350DXDynasty 200DX MM 350PMM 210MM Passport PlusSpectrum 375 Extreme08' Trailblazer 302

Reply:Those little grinders are great for tungsten sharpening. They actually have a good bit of power.  I don't think you'll bog it down with tungsten.

Reply:i agree with those who feel you wont need a guide..i have got very consistant results  when i grind  a batch of 10 or 15 , they all seem very similar.i use a sidewheel grinder but the consistency will come regardless of what tool you use..
Reply:The only types of "guides" I see used are notches cut on the outside of the guard to keep the W centered.  I think it does more harm than good, myself.
Reply:i can see how a notch would keep it from wandering and you'd just have to spin it. is it the angle or the foto, it seems like between the upper and lower there isnt but a 45 degree anglee to get the rod to the wheel. does it ework ok? how short a tung can you grind ? i see some pieces Zap uses that are about  an inch and a half long..
