Im fixing a commercial 32" SCAG mower deck for a friend.  It's a 30 yo machine with some serious deck rot.  The thickest part of the Swiss cheese like deck is 1/8".  Most of the rot is confined to the front and right deck.I cannot get the areas to weld perfectly clean.  Here's here the question lies.  I have 3/32 6011, 6013 and 7018 stick electrodes.  I have .030 ER70S6 and .035 ET71 flux core.  CO2 and C25 gas.My initial thought was 6011 with a 7018 cap so I can burn through any rust or crud.   I'm worried I'll blow right through the deck with it though.  I'm afraid that solid wire mig will not join the metal well if the joint is not clean but will appear as if it has.  Will the self shielded wire burn through any dirt as well as a 6011 will?Which process would you use with my setup?Thanks.TA Arcmaster 300CM3XMT 304S22P12 suitcase feederX-Treme 12VSOptima pulserTA161SMaxstar 150STLHypertherm PM45OP setupStihl 020AVP, 039, 066 Magnum
Reply:You know I don't post much because I am only a half decent hobby welder at best.My thoughts are:- take it apart and clean it up.  Don't count on any welding process to blow through the crap and give you a decent weld.- Don't know if you are gonna overlap patch or cut out and replace sections.  No pics and little info but I would likely end up with 6011 because I am good with it on thin materialGordie -- "I believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant."
