i have a old wade #3 bench top and noticed a bout .010 play at the chuck on older lathe are the bearing adjustable or are they just greaseable bushing
Reply:I don't know that model but if it has the old style cast iron or bronze split bearings, you should be able to tell by the way the headstock comes apart. Are there shims under the headstock caps? Can you post pictures of it? Maybe I should ask if this play is up and down, front to back or in and out towards tailstock.

Reply:From what I read, you probably have the cup and cone bearing which needs to be preloaded unless it is to far gone and has to be replaced.some of those old split brgs. were poured babbit, but that's a fer piece back.Be advised that any bearing repair will require headstock realignment with the ways.A butterfly without wings, is just an ugly bug |
