I have everything to make a rotary positioner except something to hold the work. So I was thinking a lathe chuck would be just the thing... If you have one and are willing to part with it cheap lets talk Me!
Reply:do you happen to ahve access to machining equipment? i can probably make up some plans for you to make one just as good, if not better than you will ever find on the market.later,Andy

Reply:Consider using a large copper braid strap for ground rather than a "copper brush." You arrange the strap so it can wind up at least 360 degrees before tightening and rig up a switch or alarm to avoid continuing to wind up the strap after it has tightened. Pretty simple. Since you will rarely need more than 360 degrees of rotation in a welding positioner before resetting things, the limited rotation is not a problem, and you will get much more reliable and consistent ground connection with no arcing like you would get at the wiping contact of a homemade copper brush. Additionally, the solid, bolted ground you will get with a braided strap will minimize the tendancy for welding currents to get to ground via your bearings or gears, which is destructive. If you do go with a lathe chuck, be sure to get one with 4 independent jaws, not a chuck with three scroll-driven jaws. A 4-jaw chuck is a little slower to use on round work, but is MUCH more versatile and will allow you to grip an irregular work piece and to center any desired part of an irregular work piece.awright
Reply:i'm sure you all have seen this before, but here's a place that specializes in this exact thing...http://www.pwsweld.comthey give away free catalogs... mine is on it's way now. they are probably pretty expensive, but an option none-the-less.later,Andy
Reply:Hey Me,Go to www.hgrinc.com . That is the link to HGR Indudtrial Surplus in Cleveland, Ohio. If they don't have it, you don't need it. Go to their site, check out what they have and if you find something you like call them and ask for Mike Metzger. You can even haggle with them, They will ship UPS.I recently bought a Bridgeport J-head series one mill there for $1,400.00 that they were asking $2,000.00 for and it was probably worth at least three grand. They are open weekdays 8 to 5 and one Saturday a month. It's 11 acres under roof. The place is like Disney World for electro-mechanical motor head geeks. I am sure you will find a chuck there for less than you could most other places.DaveDave B.E-MAIL: [email protected] PAGES: www.wfmservice.comwww.rides4rides.comwww.pvpmedia.com/53f100.htmDad always said, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."I say, We can make it better.
