After a few decades of abuse, the door handle on our oldest ice cream machine has worn out the hinge bushings. The handle is 303, but the pins are 304. The manufacturer says the part is obsolete and we should buy a new machine. At $50G for a small farm, that's not an option. I decided to weld the pin in the handle. I've built up 303 with 312 filler before, but haven't done too much 303 to 304. Under the hood, the 303 was acting exactly like you'd expect (ugly). Normally I can get an acceptable color after wire brushing, but this time it stayed a dull gray. I cleaned off the gray with a quick 80 grit flap disk and we were back in business. My question is was my heat input the issue here? Nearly all of my 303 buildups have been on large parts, but the hinges were smaller (1/2" thick with 1/2" pins). I welded with 95 amps and used 1/16" 312 filler. I do my buildups with pedal heat control, but only had a lift arc Maxstar for this. Shielding gas was maintained by having a helper switch off the welder.Lincoln Precision Tig 185Lincoln Power Mig 256Hypertherm PM 45Everlast 140STSmith O/A |
