Short hood thermostat or not?

I have 45 Short hood that has no thermostat in the water neck. It appears that the radiator is not of the pressure type. Should it have a thermostat or not? Anyone with a Short hood ever discovered this? This engine has a small bypass tube instead of the larger hose found on most engines.  Here is a pic of the older short hood 162 breakdown with no T-stat, and another pic of the later 162 with a T-stat. Reply:Interesting ,going look few of mine will report back ,got 46 47,48 pretty sure all have the big brass radiator with no spring on the cap ,had few early 50"s they had older all brass temp stat that had about 4 brass fins, took some apart they had no temp stat, seem like some just left removed so they could keep welding without over heating, guessing back in day they  didn't have to place buy or take to long get one ordered,, but do know purposed temp stat  keep engine internal from sweating and oil from getting milky
Reply:Yeah, I believe that an engine that gets up to operating temp burns off the condensation in the crank case. I ended up having to pull the oil pan to remove the pistons and the pan had thick sludge built up on the bottom with a mix of white milky substance within the layers. Reason for tearing it down was that one of the tappet screws had stripped out and was causing a miss in the engine, so ended up just replacing all the tappets with good ones from a donner f-163, While checking everything out, found out that all the valves and guides were shot and way out of spec, lots of oil baked on all the intake runners and valve stems. Going to do a re-ring with all new guides, I&E valves, springs, keepers.
