Okay so by now,   most of you know I like a good deal. I went into bLowe's yesterday to exchange my Kobalt 30 foot magnetic tape which had "accidentally" broken.  I walked into tool world and got another one. On the way out there was the 2 pack of 9.0 Amp DeWalt grinders.  Price 89.00.   I gave them a close look. My harbor freight was still going strong.  My other HF just needed brushes and my third 4.5-5"  7.8 amp  bLowe's 29.99 special "GMC" brand hasn't missed a beat and is variable speed.  Well, with my new SA 200,  I got to thinking about what some of you guys pointed out: Not all grinders are AC/DC compatable.  Well the wheels started turning as I was fondling the box..."diamond blade included" it said.  Whatever that means I thought.  But I was struck by the fact that my sister had given me a 10 buck gift card for Christmas to Home Despot.  I got to thinking if Home Despot had these at the 99.00 dollar price,  I could get them to beat bLowes price by 10 percent bringing the cost down another  $8.90 and then adding my $10 freebie from my sis.... well it would be worth the trip over to Home Despot today.  So my wife goes along with me because she wants to eat a Cracker barrel.  So we eat and then "walk" it off in the orange giant.  When we come to the tool aisle,  I start looking and even ask about the 2 pack. As usual, the worker passes the buck off to the "person in the dept".  She comes and says she remembers them but they ran out back at Christmas.  While we were talking, I spot a Milwaukee in the overstock that didn't match the overstock.  Then I spot a DeWalt Grinder/ Drill combo.  She obligingly pulls down both because they had just reset her aisle while on vacation and stuffed everything "up there".  The Milwaukee turns out to be a 7.0 amp AC only for 69.00  The Dewalt, at first glance said 6.0 amp on the outside of the box. After further investigation,  turns out the drill was 6 amp and the Grinder was a 10AMP AC/DC !!! She checked the price and it came back as 79.00!!!  I said "YEAH, I'll take it.!" letting my excitement show.  The regular 10 Amp was sitting right there for 89.00.   Adding my 10.00 card to it, I walked out with a total tax price of 74.00Notice on the grinder the exhaust port that discharges all sucked in dust to the rear of the machine.  That is a nice feature I haven't seen on other DeWalts. Reply:I can't stand the paddle switch myself. But I bought a two pack of the 9.0 amp dewalts a few weeks back. Just before Christmas maybe. They seem to be holding up well enough thus far...I will talk to you in a year and let you know how they are after a year of serious usage.'Mike
Reply:Both switches have their pros and cons...But the lock on feature of this meets both in the middle don't you think?Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT

Reply:I've had one of the 10 amp, paddle switch DeWalt's for about 2 1/2 years now. I opted for the paddle switch because I got tired of the snap on, snap off switch that almost all of the small grinders use deciding that they want to snap off constantly after they get some age on them. The 10 amp job is a grinding son-of-a-gun but makes a lot of racket. I opened up the gearcase and added some synthetic wheel bearing grease last summer. It's quiter but still make funny noises. I don't use it a lot now and I will probably wear out before it does.I had to give the full price when I bought mine.Last edited by Oldtimer; 01-17-2009 at 10:10 PM.
Reply:I use those grinders at work.  They usually have an o-ring on the arbor to keep the inner wheel nut on.  Great if you're only using wheels, but they get in the way if you're switching to sanding discs or wire brushes.  First thing I do when I get a new grinder is rip the o-ring off.  I quit using side switch grinders years ago, won't touch them anymore.
Reply:i have one of those i use at work i run atleast 1 wheel a day through it and have dropped in in the river once and pulled it back out and still worked the dewalt grinders are grea in my opinion
Reply:Has anyone seen this exhaust/discharge port before on the rear of the 10 amp grinders for discharging stuff taken in by the motor?Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:Nope I have never seen a rear exhaust like that. I would assume they put it back there to keep grindings out of the exhaust wheel and bearings.I just bought a new Rigid 4.5" grinder. Nice grinder and holding case, nice warrannty-lifetime, but it sure is a noisy lil bugger. I brought it back thinking it was the bearings going because maybe someone forgot to pack the bearings in grease. Turns out they all made that same noise. Yet my old Milwaukee (no folks not the beer ) doesn't make that grinding bearing noise.Co-Own CNC shop:Miller :1251 plasma cutter, MaxStar 700 TIG/Stick, & XMT 456 Multiprocess Welder.&  2 Hypertherm HPR260's Plasma CutterSorry I had a bad stroke but now I am back.
Reply:I looked at the Rigid.  It was only rated for AC operation. The cheaper milwaukees were only AC as well.  The more expensive ones were AC/DC.All of the DeWalts were rated AC/DC.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT
Reply:If an electical tool has a brush motor it will run on DC. If the switch is not rated for DC it will die in a hurry. I have replaced the switch on some brush motored tools with higher amp rated switches to cure that problem. If the tool is varible speed the switch is history if you plug it into DC and switch it on.
Reply:Congrats with a new toy! Just wondering - what are the benefits for DC? And another thing someone may consider: HF have "Drill Master" grinders on sale for $9.99. It is kind of weak for cutting heavy stuff (only 4,5 amps), but for cleaning is great. I buy those sanding disks at HF 6 pcs for $3, and each lasts at least half an hour of intensive sanding. At least, I am happy now that I do not need to change disks any more!
