This a bit of a novelty for me,I know there are thousands of mail box designs in the U.S. This was my quick and easy answer to a request from my daughter for a new farm mail box as the wooden had fallen apart,Same old gas bottle theme, but with a new application,, The Post man does not come to the house but leaves the mail in a box at the top of the lane,! Looks a bit bright at the moment but will soon weather in, Weather sealing strips and fancy top ring all plug welded leaving the welds proud to look like rivets (same as I do with the log burner hinges) the ball at the base is only fitted up through the existing valve hole and held in with a stainless split pin,It acts as a drain if any rain does get in and can be removed and the scaff tube joint fitted if It's going to be free standing on a scaffolding tube,Stainless rider and pony jumping were cut from 16g using a photograph of one of my Granddaughters as a guide and thin cutting disc, American style (mail/no mail) was a last minute addition, don't know if the postman will use it or not.Any comments, other idea's truly welcome.Gordon. Reply:Thanks for the flag info,All our UK out going mail has to be put into the official Mail boxes, Mail man only delivers and does not collect out going mail. Reply:Before 9/11 how did you figure out the postal fee required if it was picked up from your own mailbox?Lincoln SP-170 MigHypertherm powermax 45Lorch T220 AC/DC TigButters FM 215 synergic MigKemppi 180 adaptive mig RULES ARE FOR THE OBEDIENCE OF FOOLS AND THE  GUIDANCE OF WISE MEN.
Reply:Guess how much postage to stick on, and hope you're right.  Gordon, I think you're the first person I've heard say something good about the U.S. postal system in a long time...Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:Before I was born the mailman, who came across as a hardass, told my parents that all new owners must have a mailbox at the curb. He wasn't going to walk to the door. All the old people in the neighborhood were grandfathered in and kept their mailboxes on their house. Eventually new families started moving into the neighborhood. The original mailman was long gone and so none of them put a mail box at the curb.I am always amused when I see a mailman somewhere carrying that giant bag up to the door. It would be as strange as seeing milk being delivered in glass bottles.
Reply:Great job, Gordon!! You might start a new sideline w/ the design. BTW, what is the ball on the bottom for? A swivel mount for sidehill mounting??                                              MikeLast edited by mla2ofus; 04-29-2013 at 06:26 PM.Ol' Stonebreaker  "Experience is the name everyone gives to their mistakes"Hobart G-213 portableMiller 175 migMiller thunderbolt ac/dc stick Victor O/A setupMakita chop saw

Just put it on a postal scale (or a kitchen scale) and stick on the appropriate number of stamps. For large packages, of course, this was impractical, and you would just take it to the post office and get it metered. But I'm thinking specifically of things in the 1-3 lb range, like books. I sell used books on Amazon.com fairly frequently, and before 9/11, it was a simple matter to wrap them, put on a few dollars in postage, and drop them in a mailbox. Now, even a relatively small book has to be brought to the post office, which is a real hassle.
Reply:just to answer a couple of questions, The box my daughter has at the moment has never been locked, BUT, in view of all the fiddles and scams plus identity theft that seem to be happening now I thought it best to give her the option of locking or not,If she decides against a lock I will make a hook on a chain that can be used to keep the door closed, The ball at the bottom is just a spare rail head,as mentioned it is a loose fit into the bottle valve hole to act as a drain if any rain does enter the box,It can be removed in a minute if she wants the adaptor fitting to enable attaching to a scaffold tube post,Lincoln SP-170 MigHypertherm powermax 45Lorch T220 AC/DC TigButters FM 215 synergic MigKemppi 180 adaptive mig RULES ARE FOR THE OBEDIENCE OF FOOLS AND THE  GUIDANCE OF WISE MEN.
Reply:Originally Posted by joshuabardwellFascinating. I didn't know that. Ever since 9/11, we have to take all parcels over... I think it is 11 oz, or maybe 13 oz, direct to a counter, but other than that, out-going mail can be sent from the home. Good thing, as public mailboxes are pretty rare, at least here in Knoxville. Probably more common in urban areas. Before 9/11, just about anything with correct postage on it could be sent directly from the home.
Reply:I like it and it is a good way to recycle those empty containers.  I think the US Post Office does a great job, the management (govt) sucks. IMHO "G"ConductorX - The Volkswright Shophttp://volkswright.blogspot.com/http://bugwerks.blogspot.com/Miller DVI w/Spoolgun - Miller Plasma Cutter

Reply:I think the tank repurposement is awesome skill and work!I thought here in the States that when mail boxes were no longer sold from the Post Office with the "Conforms to Government Regulations" stamped into the sheet metal. Meaning you could buy or build Custom ones that they could not refuse to deliver to the box?As far as I know here we can still Ship using the "Print Labels Online"?
Reply:700R,  Thank you for your interest in the mail box, My daughter lives in the UK, Post man has no problem with the box as it saves him having to drive down to the farm,The mailbox is located at the top of the lane.Lincoln SP-170 MigHypertherm powermax 45Lorch T220 AC/DC TigButters FM 215 synergic MigKemppi 180 adaptive mig RULES ARE FOR THE OBEDIENCE OF FOOLS AND THE  GUIDANCE OF WISE MEN.
