An oldtimer who closed down his motorcycle shop gave me a 25# sealed can of Lincoln 7018-LH70 that he has had since 1972.  The can looks that old.  Since it's sealed I'm certain the rods are still good and I'm half tempted to try them out.  On the other hand, I'm tempted to keep the can sealed and put it up on the mantle as a conversation piece.Lincoln Weldanpower A/C 225 D/C 210 /6kw auxiliary (code 9113 & 9108)Lincoln Weld Pak 100 MigMiller Maxstar 150 TigLincoln Scratch Tig 200 ampMiller 8-VS Suitcase Flux CoreHypertherm Powermax 30Victor Torches / Regulators
Reply:put it on ebay, some old rich guy might give you a bunch a money for it

Reply:Sealed or not, I bet you $5 the flux will be dark brown, and they won't run good.Just a couple welders, big hammers, grinders, and torches.Work will free you.Men in dirty jeans built this country, while men in clean suits have destroyed it. Trump/Carson 2016-2024
Reply:As the submarine engineer said, there's no such thing as a perfect seal - it's all a question of how much leakage is acceptable. 42 years on something probably designed to last closer to 4 years is a huge amount of time. I'd keep it sealed, as a conversation piece or something along those lines. It's gonna take you 42 years to recreate it...

Reply:Put it up on ebay. Label it as a collectors item. People pay the goddamnest amount for them anyway. Then use the proceeds to buy a new sealed box.

Reply:If you really want to know if the can is sealed, submerge it in water. If you see bubbles, you have just screwed up. GravelThe difference between theory and practice is that in theory there is no difference.
Reply:I'll bet that in forty years the content of the flux was changed at least twice by the manufacturer , and maybe even the wire metallurgy.
Reply:I'd absolutely LOVE to get my hands on these electrodes for the entertainment of my viewers! I know people would enjoy seeing the can being opened, and seeing what's inside! I want to make a video about this, if at all possible. Would you be willing to part with this awesome relic? I'd gladly pay shipping, handling, and maybe more for your time, and give you a shoutout in the video... If not, thats 100% okay too, if you are please message me on here... GREAT FIND! Reply:I've got at least 5 of the 10# sealed round aluminum cylinders of rod that I found inside a 5 ton army maintenance truck in the scrapyard. beat up but still sealed. I haven't tried any of it, 5/32 and might be 6010? Haven't looked at em for awhile but I'll check it out if interested. I think they were 1982. I'll check tonight.Old enough to know better, young enough to try it anyway.
Reply:I think they're fine.I recently opened some circa '75-'77 LH - and at leadt a few years of the wait time was spent outdoors. No parblem at all.Open opposite the label, burn 'em up, use the empty can on the mantle.Or trade Lanse for a fresh can of same?
Reply:Kind of like a vintage fine wine, aint it?Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:If it were me... and I could remove the electrodes from the can without damaging it I would test the electrodes out, just out of curiosity. Otherwise I would place the can on the mantle, last time I checked 7018's weren't that hard to come by

Reply:I opened one of the most beat up of the sealed tins I had of the E6010, couldn't find a date but it reads Hobart Bros. The rod and flux looked like new. I still think it is about 1982 vintage. I don't know what I'll ever do with it.Old enough to know better, young enough to try it anyway.
Reply:I opened a 50lb can of Lincoln 5p red from in the late 80s or early 90s a short time ago and welds jest fine.   John
Reply:Sorry about the delay in responding.  I've been tied up all week and it's a feast week not a famine one.  I like the idea of using the can as a display and I don't see the need of putting an additional 25 pounds of dead weight on the mantle.  I do like Lance's thought about doing a video on them.  It would in some respects be in the interest of science.  I'll take a picture of the can tomorrow and post it and figure out what I'm going to do.  With my luck if I went the E-bay route it'll never sell. Reply:At 42 years, I wouldn't even say they're halfway to being antique, but old and rare for sure.

Reply:It will be up to each open minded individual to interpret the video as they see fit. Please read back in the earliest posts of this thread as the items will be hoped to be used as an educational and/or test and evaluation tool. The hermetic sealing process does seem to remove any doubt about long term storage if it is not compromised.I can't say I knew if the rods would have been any good or not, nor have I ever ran any of that type. I think the video would serve to place me at some ease as far as acquiring older rods should they be offered up. Not that it matters but I'm quite pleased EJ was willing to donate them as he did. I for one, enjoyed the video, and hope you did too. Thanks,SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....

Reply:Gotta say I was surprised to see the "antique" can get brutally assaulted, Since the described goal was to preserve can as a mantle-piece, I sort of expected to see more finesse, maybe a tiny "nip" taken out of an inconspicuous spot?Last edited by denrep; 01-02-2015 at 10:46 PM.

Reply:Colored dots on rods were used to identify different rods before the current numbering system came to be but Lincoln still used the colored dots on some of their rods. 3/32" rods are normally 12" long and 1/8" are 14". Not sure if he was comparing the same size rods in the video.Last edited by Welder Dave; 01-04-2015 at 02:59 AM.
Reply:Loved the video.  I chuckled with the thought of anyone wanting to "save" an unopened can of electrodes that were only a mere 42 years old.   I suspect that the desire not to use 25lbs of sealed electrodes and to "store" them, is probably coming from "hoarders".  Aka: junk collector).  Hey, they make TV shows about those kinds of folks.    I'd hate to see that person's garage or shop, tripping over everything and anything within it.  That can was meant to be discovered, opened and used.   It's NOT an antique in the least.   Keeping the old opened can itself and on display in the shop is cool, but the electrodes inside, definitely needed to be used up.   Now they're going to be and that's a good thing.   The unopened can was nothing special and just took up space, collecting dust. Now, if one finds some truly original "old" electrodes that were covered with asbestos infused  threads as the flux,  then that would certainly be a 100 year old "relic" maybe worthy of being a shop  "conversation piece."Lincoln Power Mig 216Lincoln AC/DC-225/125Miller  625 X-Treme PlasmaMiller 211 Forney 95FI-A 301HF 91110Victor Journeyman O/PMilwaukee DaytonMakita  Baileigh NRA Life Member
Reply:I have a pair of 100% asbestos gloves and their storage container from the big one, (WWII) in my shop case. These are the gloves used by aircraft crash crews on carriers, and issued to machine gun crews to change barrels on the Browning .50 caliber "heavy barrel" machine guns. They've been quite the conversation piece too.SlobPurveyor of intimate unparalleled knowledge of nothing about everything.Oh yeah, also an unabashed internet "Troll" too.....

Reply:It says 25 lbs. on the label. What else I thought was interesting was the cardboard lining the inside of the can. Back in the day using a grinder lightly on the rim was how we opened the cans. On an old can like that that was to be saved, why not use a can opener? I did see a guy once open a can using a chisel and hammer to knock the whole rim off but I've never tried it.

Reply:Originally Posted by denrepQuestion, SuperArc... So how does an item reach the iconic 100-year-old  status of your last paragraph's description, if when well on its way there it's still to be considered just so much dust-collecting clutter? To boot, as to saving an empty can,  the can occupies no less space empty. I have no qualms with using up the contents, I just feel that after being made available the way it was, the can deserved a gentler opening.
Reply:Originally Posted by SuperArcdenrep, did you even comprehend what I said originally?   Actually finding a "100" year old tin of electrodes is one thing.   But finding and then keeping a 42 year old can for another 58 years (42 + 58 = 100) just to have an "iconic" collection of electrodes is rather dumb, wouldn't you say?   Anyway, you probably wouldn't  even make it another 58 years to see a "100 year old" "iconic" tin, because the diabetes would  get you first.     Again, I say burn those rods.  It's NOT like anyone stumbled across  a 100 year old sealed bottle of single malt scotch for cry'n out loud.  Again denrep,  comprehending what one read and saw on a video apparently is not your specialty.  Since you like trying to put someone on Front street, why not check yourself first and pay closer attention to the narration in the video, as well as looking at the can itself.   Do you think Lanse is a moron and didn't know that he was holding a 25lb can of 3/32" electrodes???   This isn't his first campfire and neither is it mine, cowboy.   Under the word "Jetweld" it clearly states "25lbs."   Below that, it says "3/32"".    I saw (and heard) that description of the can the first time I watched the video.   Cheers buddy.
