I am a current student at Wayne State in Detroit,Mi.  Recently I have discovered that I would much rather pursue a career in the trades rather than keeping my nose in a book.  I have become very interested in welding, but could not find a place to post questions until I discovered this forum.  If you guys could take the time and help me out with some questions I would be much appreciate it.1.)  With the new regulations, is welding safer to your health than in the past?2.)  How is the job outlook for welding?3.)   what type of welding will be in most demand?4.) Is it possible to have a family while traveling for welding?5.)  Should I go to school or find an apprenticeship?6.)  Does anyone know of any good welding schools in Detroit?I apologize for the long post, I'm just trying to head in the correct direction.  Thank you for your time.
Reply:Welding is the same as it always was. There's new safety regulations for shops but most of the time it's up to the individual to use the proper safety gear. There will always be a need for welding but the economy can affect the job outlook. I'm in Alberta and if the price of oil drops like it has, a lot of projects get put on hold or cancelled. Not sure what's in the most demand. Probably depends on the area you're in.You're best to start off in a shop and get some experience. Travelling from job to job and trying to start a family is a recipe for failure in my opinion. You want to get into an apprenticeship regardless but if you have no experience it can difficult finding a shop willing to teach you. Taking a good course will give you an advantage over someone with no training at all and may help you get a foot in the door with employers. Not familiar with what's available in Detroit but doesn't their economy suck right now?
Reply:Welcome to the sight. Lots of different kinds of welding jobs and they are all different. Are you wanting a factory or construction type job? Work for some one else or have your own shop/rig? Are you willing to relocate? In general life on the road is a catastrophe waiting to happen for a relationship with or with out children. The job outlook varies with any job. Good luck on your career search.
Reply:Thanks for the reply.  My girlfriend is majoring in petroleum geology, so eventually I will have to relocate anyways.  I have heard that the pipeline guys make good money. I need to do some research or some sort of job shadows to figure out what type of setting I like best.
