Goodmorning, everyone!!So, here's another video of mine, its about... You guessed it... 4G Stick Welding. I made this video for folks with very little if any overhead stick experience, and it covers rod and drag angles, arc length, and how to "aim" the puddle more towards one plate, so you're working with, NOT against gravity:[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UDQE0e1ObRg[/ame]Anyway, hope you guys like it. Happy welding, everyone! [Account Abandoned 8/8/16 Please Do Not Attempt Contact Or Expect A Reply]. See you on YouTube! -ChuckE2009
Reply:I enjoyed it and found/viewed some of your others on Youtube. Thanks for that.
Reply:If you slow down a bit it will really improve the aesthetic quality of the bead. A lot of people tend to run too fast because they're afraid of the puddle. If you keep an eye on the puddle it won't fall down on yer noggin I'm surprised the teachers didn't emphasize this.A small amount of oscillation is permissible with overhead 7018, not much.....just a leetle Again, this is for the purpose of proper bead build, and filling any undercut. DON'T RUSH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The large ripples in the weld give you the clue as to the tooo faaast travel. I know it's nit picking, but it's the difference between a really good weld, or just a so-so weld.I don't know where you're going with your career, but you should strive to be the best in all types of welding. You have a real good opportunity to learn everything now, not like I had.....use it. I was lucky that Don showed me some stuff, and I improved on it for my own techniques.I'll never do pipe, or TIG, or..............................a lot of things, but I've done the best I can to be good at what I do......mostly fabrication, and mostly stick welding.Your overhead should look like this, and nothing less. PRACTICEWhen you finally go out there and use your arm you'll have to do a variety of positions very well to accomplish most any kind of build. This is the ultimate "passing grade". Something that's in use under heavy conditions. So don't just be happy with moving on to another process in class with a "certification", remember there is very real stuff to come. And lose the cavalier attitude, good enough is not good enough. Not breakin your balls, just thinking you might pretty good down the road someday."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/

Reply:Great job on the video Lanse, every vid is getting better and better with your instructional end of it, and you are really coming into yourself as a welder lately Samm and Tozzi are both correct. I thought you were moving a little to fast, and overhead is as easy as pie where you can do it in your sleep through time. We all weld different, and that's just personal preference, but just a tip on how I almost always weld overhead unless circumstances make me have to change. I put the rod straight in the stinger,I hold the first few inches of the rod with my free hand(I'm a righty so that would be my left) like a pool stick, in between my index and middle fingers. This gives me the ultimate control. Once I start welding the rod will only thumbnail a tiny little bit, with that slight thumbnail it will direct your arc. Now because of that you can stuff that rod up in that joint as tight as possible and rotate your wrist slightly left and slightly right, keeping your hand perfectly in line with your forearm, and that slight thumbnail will direct your arc as perfect as possible without having to hook it while weaving. As you feed that rod between your fingers and it starts getting to hot, the rod is half done and you could slowly move your hand out of the way and just let go and still have the same control while you play with the radio dial, or pick your underwear out of your butt or something All in all just a little tip, and another great instructional vid there bud! Reply:Hey Stretch,Just saying thanks for the videos. Kinda funny, it seems like "yesterday" when you started posting your first vids and questions. You've come a long ways.I'd add though, you might consider taking some secondary education courses, if you have any spare time. Not cuz you're doing bad, but you seem to enjoy education.Hey also, a Fitter's cap is more than a fashion statement, it can be PPE too .......just sayin.Lincoln SA 200Esab Caddy 160Thermal Arc 201TSMiller Dialarc HFI don't like making plans for the day because then the word "premeditated" gets thrown around the courtroom....

Reply:I can't be the only guy running a beautiful bead vert or overhead and tolerating the berries burning through my sleeve into the inside of my elbow, or somehow sneaking past my leathers and rolling down my back, right? Why would you stop? That burn is going to be done by the time you get your rod set down and pull your jacket off. Might as well just finish your rod. I have leather apron, leather jacket that buttons all the way up. I have a welder's cap, I wear steel toe leather redwings, I rarely wear long sleeves under my leathers. I have a denim long sleeve button up shirt on my TIG machine. I know how to suit up. And I don't always suit up. But doing overhead? I suit up. You have to. Reply:Over head is the cleanest way to weld with stick. There is very little chance to bury slag as it always wants to come down which is nice. I run the same amps over head as I do for flat position with 1/8 7018.Burns?
