Anyone use silica-Bronze filler rod to 'braze' dissimilar metals using your tig torch as a heat source?I am doing this with some bicycle chain and cogs, and it's working out really well for my non-structural strength needs. Anyone?Motorboating...in the Cleavage of the Tetons
Reply:I have used the silbro rod to make a hammer where I built up a 1/4" pad on the end of a 2" OD cummins wristpin and it melted really well into the steel I've also noticed that I can run an almost perfect stringer stacked dime bead with the stuff. Check out my post called my big hammer. Never grazed with it but I know from what I did whith it it seems that it would be structurally strong and seems to bond really well with steelMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication
Reply:rideitOne of my skill-builder jobs was in a Precision Sheet Metal shop building computer wafer processing station. Most of the work was building complex S/S cabinets for the smart-parts.  About a fourth of the cabinets were made of cold-rolled.  The S/S was TIGed, but the CR was braze.  All the joints were laps on a flange; the edge of the flat piece mated just short of the radius on a short flange; the bronze filled the trough.  It was much faster then welding, with virtually no deformation, and with adisc, it dressed like butter.Opus

Reply:I recently used it on a wheel chair repair that was all brazed from the factory. Welds up nice. Attached ImagesI hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys

Reply:When using these rods are you actually melting the base metal then adding the filler in like regular tig or is the base metal just getting hot enough for the filler to melt and stick to?

Reply:ive tried to braze, but never seem to get it to flow..when i let it get hotter and form a basemetal puddle, the silbronze fills beautifully..but i cant get it to wick into a capilaary spacei submit that all the fotos tat are attached to this thread are an example of that..

Reply:What are some real world tig BRAZE applications that I would do at home like I said I welded with the silibronze rod on my hammer but what can I actually braze at home using my tig rigMiller Syncrowave 210 w/CK FlexLoc 150  3/6/14ESAB PCM 1125 Plasma CutterAtlas 12x36 LatheACER 9x42 3hp millHarig 612 Surface GrinderDRINK Machine              welding&fabrication

Reply:Is braze the best term for that? Why not weld?Hey~!! It's a hobby. It's not supposed to make sense~!!
Reply:I use some sicone/bronze that I was given a while back.Mainly it is used to attach a copper tube to a steel plate for our model airplane exhaust.  I then finsh the system by welding copper fittings and copper tubes.  It works pretty well and the strength is great.  It never breaks at the steel flange.  The copper tubing will flex and eventually crack but it is easy to fix.  It takes a long time for this to happen and the life of the mofel airplane is usually over by this time....ie crashed..hahaI also use it to repair the stainless steel exhaust systems.  The bends used in the model systems are very thin and the SS gets stretched to the max.  The vibration seems to work harded it even further.  It gets oily and is very hard to clean well enough to weld very well.  The SB works much better under these conditions.  At least for me.One thing is does not do well and that is fill holes.  You need a very tight fit to make it nice.

Reply:Originally Posted by rideitBecause the definition of weld is to melt two materials, and join them when in a liquid state. With brazing, you are just heating the base metal, and only melting the filler, so it's not a 'weld'.

Reply:Originally Posted by RaulRight. And this just confoozes me more-er.There is a TIG torch - Yes? There is an arc - Yes?What's the welder doing to make this  so it does not melt the base metal~? Run really low amps? Just get  it hot like an O/A torch?Does the welder add the filler to the arc, since there is no puddle~??
Reply:Originally Posted by shovelonAnd you just cracked that nut. There is no capillary action with tig brazing.
Reply:When o/a torch brazing, the flux between the mating surfaces keeps the metal clean and helps promote capillary action. In my experience, it's also easier to coax the braze across a long flow length with the o/a flame since it covers more area more evenly.
Reply:I TIG brazed all the time where I used to work, to the point that if it wasn't a structural piece that required the weld, or customer request, I would TIG braze. This is an engine cradle I made for my 4.0 Jeep engine, the vertical run got hotter than it should have.As others have mentioned, its great for cast iron repairs on engine blocks.  I also used it for sheetmetal, reinforcing louvered windage trays, oil pumps to pickup tubes, build up on wear areas and general fabrication.-AlexFor weld fixture assembly there's no better way than silicon bronze, I use it a lot where super strength isn't an issue  Miller Dynasty 350Twenty Six HammersThree Crow BarsBig Rock
