I make quite a few of these just for fun.   The last ones have been tig.   I used a piece of 1/8 x4" cut off 4 one inch pieces and one 4" piece.  Clean them up removing all the millscale where they are going to be welded and round the edges.Tig TacksWeld top and bottom corners.   Everything is straigt.Weld through the cornersLast edited by David R; 12-27-2011 at 08:35 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:i have always loved building boxes - i think its a great way to keep up practice...and its cheap!not only are you practicing how to build something square, but at the same time practicing heat transfer to stop the box from distorting. I used to help in my universities introductory welding class. we would teach pre-engineering majors and ag teachers basics and fundamentals of welding, and when students would have a hard time with brazing or oxy-fuel i would tell them to build a 4"x4" metal box out of 1/8th inchmany of them learned how to not only build something, but at the end they could see how they progressed. they could identify the beginning welds and then where they got better. that's where i would do water holding tests over 24 hour periods as well as dye-penetrate tests. I would have them grind out the bad welds and teach them how to not only remove bad welds blend new welds into existing onesplus, there is always a use for a good 5-sided box for storage on the shelves!Last edited by smokin_dodge; 12-27-2011 at 08:33 PM.

Reply:I built a 3"x3" cube 3/4 full of water in high school.  Used oxy/acy & it held water.  I had a devil of a time sealing it, as the heat would create steam & blow out the pinhole I was trying to seal.  Figured it out by chucking the cube full of water in the freezer overnight, then a quick hot flame & quick seal.  It didn't look too good at that one spot, but all the other welds were stack -o- dimes.Doing these things are harder than they look for the beginner.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build

Reply:I love building box projects. Well done.  A tip if I may, If you wanted to make a lid for your boxes, just make a complete box, with all sided welded and allow to cool, then make your 1" or how ever thick you want your lid to be, then simply cut the top of the box off and you have a perfect fitting lid. Then add hinges. Some Blue , Some Red & Some GreyProverbs 16:2-3.2 "All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord. 3 Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans."

Reply:Just cut up some plate and weld it.   Use a hack saw if you have to.  This stuff can be purchased at any tractor supply or maybe even NAPA.  Home Repo should have it  too.   They have lengths of extruded aluminum. Here is my attempt at an aluminum box about 5 years ago and one now.  Same machine.  The inside counts as much as the outside.   DavidLast edited by David R; 12-28-2011 at 07:32 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Built my first one today out of aluminum for outside corner practice... 1.5x1.5x8.Gotta remember to really pull back on heat by the time I come to the corner. It's not TOO ugly, but I definitely need to work on consistency. Airtight first try.
Reply:Did this one awhile back, I like to make a treasure chest one with 1/2" steel one day, lol I'm digging the boxes.

Reply:Here is the box I built today with OA. I am a little rusty, first time I had done it in a few years. I built it from 1/8" x 4" HR, 1" tall sides. Puddled the bottom, verticle up on the corners sides with 1/16" ER70 just to say I did. When I get more time, I will TIG one out of steel and aluminum. It was fun just to mess around for a change!! Reply:Learn to use the pedal more..You need very little heat at the end of a aluminum weld as you found out...Youse guys are gonna make me do this now arn't ya?...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:You are getting there,    Box looks square.  welds look good, 3/16 is pretty big for a little box.   Once I read the thickness, it explains why the welds look so big, they are. Thanks for the inside pics, it shows you have control of the heat.  I can see the box heated up as you did each side by the different bead profiles.  Let it cool for each side or back off on the heat as you go.  Make another one!Now I have to make a 1/4" steel one.Good job, make more  DavidLast edited by David R; 01-07-2012 at 05:55 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.

Reply:Ok guy's thanks for the input!  Yes I did the welds all at once shifting sides and it did seem to go smoother as I went.I have to use the scraps available to me.  I will try to get some different thickness of materials and build some more!     I want to be the best that I can & I know it takes a lot of time under the hood.
