Sorry for what is probably an absolute no brainer for most of you folk.I am getting a galv steel balustrade welded, the top rail is about 2" wide, and the bottom about 1" wide, so each section will take about 8" total welding (top, bottom and sides). There's a good number of them (14 welds in all), so I'd think travel and setup time would be a smaller part of the total cost (which is estimated to be $7-800 for about 56" of total welding)I am being told that to arc weld this, it'll be about $100 a section, or $12.50 and inch. This seems absolutely crazy to me, but then again, I don't know what I am doing.Thoughts? Am I being ripped off blind because they think they can, or is this really what it costs to weld? Thanks!
Reply:Between $50 and $100 per hour PLUS consumables, is sort of the number I keep seeing tossed around on here (FWIW I don't weld for a living). This kind of job has lots of issues with making sure everything stays straight and aligned, so there is a lot more effort required here than just laying down metal. The actual inches of weld is probably not the main cost driver. If you don't want it straight, square, and plumb, then any old hack could do the job. But you get what you pay for. Ask him how long the job will take, divide by the number of sections and see if it comes out to roughly $100 per hour. I might also pay him to do one first to see what kind of quality he produces. I am not sure what you mean by "arc welding" but if by that you mean stick or SMAW, then I am not sure that is even the best choice for an ornamental/architectural item like that. I would probably price it out with some other welders to see what it costs to get it TIG welded.Miller Multimatic 255
Reply:It takes me the same amount of time to get my truck to your site and set up for 56" of weld as it does for 56 feet of welds. Now your railing has to be plumb and square each picket has to be square and each section has to be the same as al the others you pay for all that fit up time |
