We bought a used cab and chassis to replace the wore out, crack riddled frame in our small refer truck. Body transfer went somewhat smoothly (the '04 Fords are wider than the '89 models!?!). The compressor hookup at the refer shop is a different story. To save some money, I've done most of the welding in the past. Mostly simple stuff like a compressor bracket for the engine or welding some fittings to a manifold. But this body swap came at a very busy time for me (fieldwork has me doing a few 18 hour days) so we had them buy all the brackets and adapters to get our truck on the road. The refer company orders Ford compressors and mounting brackets. The compressor comes complete with fittings ready to hookup, unless you order the compressor with the wrong fittings, which they did. Easy enough, just cut off the fittings and weld on ones that will work. They call and ask if I have the time to do this as it's my truck and the weldor they use is very busy. I ask them what the metals are to make sure I have the appropriate filler as my LWS is on the way. "Al compressor body and out stainless steel fittings." Yeah. Sure. I tell them I can't do that, and I don't think anyone will be able to make it work. Guy tells me to use 312 or that "W" filler. He heard it will weld anything. Nope. Not going to work. They screwed up, but I'm "not a real weldor anyway," so they're going to call around for some quotes. So I'm assuming they only had to make one or two calls before reality set in and they ordered the correct compressor.
