Would offshore be a good "strait out the gates" job for a 18-20 year old? what kind of welding would be required?

Reply:I posted some pictures and videos from some of the off shore jobs I've been on in this thread.   CEP also contributed some pretty impressive pics of things he's worked on.   It might help give you an idea of what to expect off shore. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...light=offshore
Reply:there is a lunatic (no offence if it's any of you guys) on youtube pitching an offshore employment guide. he also claims you can make 3 thou a day building trailers in your backyard. you may want to take it with a grain of salt.i.u.o.e. # 15queens, ny and sunny fla
Reply:there's two good things about working offshore. You get all the overtime you want and you get all the food you want. And that's about it.
Reply:The last time I worked offshore, they put the night shift sleeping quarters all the way up top, with a helipad on top. Try sleeping with a helicopter idling 3 feet over your head all day long.I went and told them I was dragging up because I couldn't get any sleep. So, they moved the day shift up there instead. They all hated me after that because they had to climb some steps to get to their quarters.

Reply:You were lucky you even had different quarters.  On a pipe laying vessel the same quarters are shared between the night shift and the day shift.
Reply:"The long hours mean “it’s hard to have a life,” Mr. Friend said. Eventually, he said he may pursue an advanced degree in metallurgy and research welding materials and techniques. Reply:Thanks for all the contributions learning a lot about off shore...
Reply:Xray welding on a rig is terrible.
Reply:That Yahoo link is inspiring. There are more opportunities out there. Meeting and observing offshore welders is what sparked my interests to learn more about welding in general and to veer from sticking to underwater welding only which is mostly better termed "commercial diver". Every rig and job is different. Every company is different, but there is a similar feel to all offshore jobs in that its environment is unusual than most and there are more safety factors apparent. I think it is worth trying out for anyone who is in for an adventure, something different, can handle being alone, has initiative and can work without being told, working in all weather and shifts, and doesn't mind sacrificing a bit for good pay. The most successful ones I have met in it for the long haul have stable home bases and support group on land. It is definitely a lifestyle changer.
Reply:How long are the trips out?  Are there different options?  If so, what are they?

Reply:Oh, man... Lots to research... I myself have never been an offshore welder, only an "underwater welder". I am unsure of specifics regarding topside only offshore welding/rig welding. I do know that length of trips out depends on companies; i.e., if they allow OT or not. Some companies have rotations and some are ok with you staying out there as long as you want and/or as long as there is work. Other variables are length of contracts and how many jobs are in queue. Some companies are Gulf of Mexico only, International, west coast, east coast... Then you're in union territory. I don't know much about that. Big companies are Seadrill, Exxon, Noble... indeed.com has several listings for big and smaller companies/employers. There is more than what I just wrote. Hope it helps anyone.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Reply:I did some looking on indeed like you said, and found a huge list of companies . I never knew there was so many options.

Reply:Sure going offshore out of the gates when your young is good. Why would it not be? look at it like this, its a pretty even playing field in the GOM (gulf of mexico). all the companies are the same... if you want me to elaborate I will.
