Hi all I just bought a metal lathe and had a hell of a time moving.  Worth every problem too.  What do ya think.  Its a Hendey 14x6 lathe.  I paid 500 bucks for it.
Reply:Looks very promising, nice steal!
Reply:Can I borrow it? I'll only need it for a little while. Only when the last tree has died and the last river has been poisoned and the last fish has been caught will we realize we cannot eat money.                                         -Cree Indian ProverbSA 200 LincolnVictor Torches

Reply:Looks like an interesting setup with the belts/gears and motor; is it three phase? The taper attachment is a nice addition too. What other machine tools do you already have--you know, you also need a bandsaw and a drill press or mill to go with it! Then storage for tooling, lots of round stock.....Any first projects in mind yet?
Reply:The taper attachment(if I'm seeing right), and toolpost are worth as much as you paid for the machine.  You really did goodThe legs are funny  I got the same on my Atlas/Clausing.  They seemed to build them that way in those days.  Scares the daylights out of you when you trailer or truck it.  You just positively know it's gonna fall over Attached Images"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Yes the motor is 3 phase but the phase o matic- that is what the really call it.  Converts single phase to three phase.  And you read my mind.  I'm looking at a bandsaw for my next purchase and a buddy of mine is going to sell me a full size drill press for 150.  Here is the bandsaw I was thinking of. http://www.tools-plus.com/jet-hbs-56s.htmlI still have to set the lathe up.  The maintenance guy at my work is going to come over to dial in the lathe bed in and center out the tail stock.  Then show me a few tricks.  He has had his lathe since 1965.  I really dont know what my first project is going to be.  But after these purchase I'm going to be building a cnc mill table.  So I'm going to try to make all the shafts for the pulls.  I only have a hand full of hours on a lathe so I have to do some reading before I go after it.  Do you have any suggestions for my first project?

Reply:The taper attachment is the separate 'way' showing on the back of the machine in picture 3, which moves the cross slide forward/backward as the carriage moves, allowing a taper to be turned on the workpiece. You might check your local library for some books on machining/machine tools to learn the basics.I have a rotary phase converter for my mill; there have been a few good threads on this site about them and related topics in the last few years. My lathe is a bit smaller and uses 115v, single phase.I use my lathe for mostly lost of small jobs, fixing things or making smaller parts for bigger jobs, so can't suggest any good first projects offhand.I know a fellow who sells plans for a model 'hit-or-miss' engine which requires just a lathe and a drill press, plus some welding, of course. That should come a bit later, I'd expect.
