Came across this anvil today on CL and couldn't pass it up, got it for $40 (hope it's worth it). Doesn't look like it's been used very much at all.  It's a 70lber, 7" across and 14.5" long. No name or marks on it so I figure it's probably a Harbor Freight or some sort. Should handle anything I need to do on it, even better than the piece of rail I have (see picture).GraysOrnamentalIron.com
Reply:Meh, i would talk anyone out of buying that. I use my anvil at work every day and  my one at home ocassionaly, when it comes to quality you get what you pay for. A really good new anvil runs about $1000. My eyes are worth it.I hate being bi-polar it's awsomeMy Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys
Reply:Hard to go wrong for that price. If you think about it how awesome is it to have an anvil on a vise? Me personally I do not like using a vise anvil but that is because I don't think that is the purpose of the tool however effective it may be.A guy give me an old busted up vise and I cut off the sguare tube of the moveable jaw to make a rather nice anvil. I am quite happy to have it.
Reply:It's not a bad find for $40. Not at all.Obviously, not the grade of a quality anvil, but it'll get you by no sweat Expert Garage Hack....https://www.facebook.com/steven.webber.948
Reply:That should work for you. I saw some big buck priced anvils and they are amazing, so is the price ! Prices used to be reasonable now they could go for a easy $5 a pound and up depending on your area.
Reply:If it is made from cast iron, always make certain that you wear eye protection. I have a similar anvil that I bought years ago from H.F. but I'm wary of using it for fear of knocking a chunk of it off. That being the case, I've recently started making an anvil out of a 20" section of 100# rail. The steel in a railroad track section is nearly ideal for an anvil. I'm looking for some ring and some bounce, neither of which you wll find in cast iron anvils.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
Reply:That's not bad at all for a start. As noted, make sure you use eye protection with it. Chances are if it's a few years old it will be better quality than what is being sold by places like HF now, so it may actually turn out to be a decent tool if you don't beat on it with cold metal. I'm in the process of making a protective cap for mine out of wide C channel for just those occasions... or you could use your old chunk of rail.
